Stand Tall—Tú tonu mai
W
elcome and happy 5th birthday to Jay Hingaia. You will have a
wonderful time at our school Jay.
It’s a busy time at school. Teachers have been writing reports and
children have been getting their portfolios ready to go home. Reports
and portfolios come home tomorrow and three way conferences are
taking place next Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons starting at
2pm. You will have already got your 3WC letter home.
Three way conferences start at 2pm and town children and children
who are usually picked up may go home at 2pm. The buses will run at
the normal time.
Please read your report with your child and take special notice of the
parent letter which accompanies the reports. Remember to bring the
report and portfolio to the 3WC with you.
Happy birthday this
week to
Jay, Simone and Gita
Computers in schools
Do you know we have 76 devices at school? Computers are an
important tool for learning but in education circles there is a lot of
discussion on how much we should be using them in our classrooms
and how we should be using them.
We are just starting a major review of computers in our school and
where we need to go with them in the future.
All Year 3 parents have received a questionnaire on computers and
we would appreciate a 100% reply please. Year 3 parents—you are
our important sample.
Standing Tall
In early December we are having a ‘Think Tank’ on
computers in our school and early next year senior
staff are visiting schools using computers in
various ways in Nelson and Christchurch.
If you have any ideas or thoughts on computer
usage in our school we would like to hear from you.

Decile ratings of schools
We often hear about decile rankings in schools. NZ schools are given
a 1-10 decile ranking with 10 the highest and 1 the lowest. Our latest
decile ranking is unchanged at 6, like every other Golden Bay school.
Deciles are often misunderstood. A school’s decile ranking is not a
shorthand for the quality of a school although at times the media
fuel this perception. In fact, deciles have nothing to do with quality
they are simply a mechanism for funding schools based on a number
of factors such as socio economic, parents’ jobs, parents’
qualifications, number of people living in houses and average income
information from a school’s catchment and which is taken from
census information.
The lower the decile the more money a school gets. At present the
government is looking closely at deciles and deciding whether they
are going to keep them or not.
Have a great weekend. Neil

Junior Tin Bum
It has been proposed that the Junior Tin Bum Triathlon be
re-instated into the programme for the Annual Tin Bum
Triathlon which will be held on 1 March 2015 at Pohara
Beach. However, for this to occur we need a team of
parents to help. We are looking for people who would be
prepared to help with the organisation and running of the
races which would take place after the adult competition. If
you would be keen to help then please text Katrina on
0275446047 or phone 5248640.
