E. PROJECT DESCRIPTION
1. Please provide a short summary of your project including the aims and objectives
Stories in Action (SIA) use drama inquiry education to explore environmental and social issues. Young people
aged 3-12 learn about ecosystems, sustainability, and community through exploring and generating stories.
Our ultimate goal is for young people and staff in primary schools and ECE centres to develop creativity and
innovation in causing positive environmental action. SIA offers three things for schools: Practical Sessions
with young people, Professional Development with staff, and specially designed resources.
Two years of sponsorship will enable Stories in Action to be a self-sustaining, not for profit NGO working
with and supporting at least 150 schools per year; over 15,000 students, and 2000 ECE and primary staff in
professional development. (See section 3: work programme)

“Environmental education is an investment in our future. If New Zealand is to have a sustainable future,
increased understanding of the environment and environmental decisions is essential."
Guidelines for Environmental Education in New Zealand Schools.
2.
Please outline the background to your project, briefly describing the research or best/promising
practices that inform your project.
SIA supports the New Zealand curriculum and draws from the achievement objectives of learning areas:
English, P.E/ Health, Arts, and Science. It also supports the principles and strands of Te Whariki, ECE
curriculum. SIA use ‘Mantle of the Expert’ (MOTE) pedagogy used throughout the world and promoted in
NZ by the Ministry of Education. We are the first company in NZ to use this highly effective teaching and
learning method for environmental education and will work closely with ‘Mantle of the Expert Aotearoa’
online community run through the University of Waikato. SIA can support Environmental Project Based
Learning (E-PBL), Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC), and Inquiry-based learning, used heavily in
primary schools throughout NZ. We have developed unit plans in which SIA take the first phase ‘Immersion’,
and the teachers take our planning to complete the other phases in the unit in their own centre.
Effectiveness will be measured through evaluation, the stories produced by students, and research
undertaken in a master’s degree through the University of Auckland in which Stories in Action work will be a
case study.
