based on the autobiography of Patrick Dennis,
and the play by Jerome Lawrence & Robert E. Lee
O
ur story takes place in New York City, during the 1920s.
When her orphaned 12-year-old nephew Patrick shows
up during one of New York socialite Mame Dennis’ wild parties, a
new life begins for both. But the Bank Trustees pack Patrick off to
boarding school, and Mame marries Beau, a rich southerner. She
exchanges letters with her nephew during her 8-year ‘round-the-world
honeymoon. When Beau dies in an accident in the Alps, Mame returns
home—and decides to write her memoirs. In her absence, however, her
nephew has grown to be a stuffy and bourgeois young man, and is about
to marry a girl from “good stock.” Auntie Mame and her friends are
determined to save Patrick from a “dry-veined” life-- reminding him
that “Life is a Banquet—and most poor suckers are starving to death!”.
