DENNIS BASS, ARTISAN Dennis Bass liked wood shop be er than history or math at Sultan High School. This early fascina on with woodworking gave him a start for the future projects he has completed. His first remodeling job was conver ng a garage into a recrea on room at his first home. Through the years he has done many altera ons to Nancy & Dennis’ home in Monroe, WA. Dennis discovered he could buy the tools and wood needed for home projects for less than having someone do the work, and he kept the tools when the job was finished! Some of the remodeling he has done on their home has been: remodeled the living room; readapted the open area with a bar separa ng the kitchen and living room area; rewired their home; put in a new kitchen counter; transformed the pa o to a sunroom with a hot tub. This tub was moved to the back yard eventually; remodeled the downstairs half bath wih a mirrored counter. Dennis and Nancy purchased a motor home that had been gu ed. Dennis repaneled, rewired it Nancy made the cushions for the RV. This led to construc on of a garage and car port which he built. A neighbor wanted to race mini speed boats and Dennis made two diﬀerent boats and also made a few repairs a er some of the races. Another neighbor wanted to make cedar strip canoes. Dennis made three which sold in a La Conner store. Building a cedar strip canoe is a great project for the home builder. At about the age of 5 he was diagnosed with asthma caused by the eucalyptus tree and its oil. His family moved to the Pacific Northwest and their first home was a horse barn in Eugene, OR. He said that worked out well as members of the family had their own stall in the barn! Eventually, they moved to a the small town of Index near Monroe, WA. He a ended schools in Sultan nearby. The Sultan Public Schools serve communi es of Sultan, Startup, Gold Bar and Index. It is located at the base of Stevens Pass in the Sky Valley area, where the Sultan River flows into the Skykomish River. A er serving in the Army, one of his Army pals helped Dennis get a job with Morris Knudson Construc on as a driller’s helper. Later he spent 28 years as a pipefi er for Todd Shipyards at Harbor Island, Sea le. He re red at 56½ years of age. Dennis & Nancy Bass are fully involved with the Sky Valley Whirlwinds Square Dance Club. They host a summer picnic for the club as well as other contri‐

On August 9 Sky Valley Whirlwinds had their annual picnic at Dennis and Nancy Bass’s home. Since we were able to meet many of our former club members at Lee Clark’s memorial service, we invited them to our picnic. Marylyn Jones and I called many of these members to tell them of this event by looking up phone numbers from old rosters. We had Hank Orth from Yakima, one of our original callers (1980‐87). Dennis and I learned square dancing from him several years ago. John Wood, president during (1979‐80). Also Elroy and Mary Ellen Teterud, from Moses Lake, president during (1985‐86) and we had our lessons in their basement. Chuck and Doris Mon‐
son from Spokane and they were president during (1990‐92). Also Carol and Percy Berget, Jerry and Photo by Nancy Bass Marylyn Jones, Terri Rollins, and Jackie Teakles, president during (1983‐85) joined the Sky Valley Membership to make 49 total people to enjoy fellowship and GREAT food. Dennis also served smoked chicken (it was really delicious) but it took longer to cook than the people were willing to wait for food, but s ll found room for a li le more food. Later we had ice cream le from the 50’s dance and Hank called a square dance p in the grass. I thought it should have been in the pool. Nancy & Dennis Bass, President during (1992‐94) & (2000‐02) Amy Wader and Dennis Webb were married on August 17, 2014. They exchanged marriage vows at an outdoor ceremony at 3:00 in the a ernoon at the Joe & Karen Bahr residence in Bothell, WA. There was an outdoor potluck. The weather was warm and beau ful for Amy and Dennis. Many a ended this happy occasion on Sunday. IN MEMORIAM We have lost three people associated with our square dance club in recent months. Lee Clark a long me member and dancer in the dance com‐
munity. His wife, Wilma, predeceased him. Eugene McDonald has been a club member in recent years and le behind his good friend and caregiver, Nora Lashbrook. Don Wiggins was our class lessons teacher for the Sky Valley Whirlwinds in years 09‐10 and 10‐11. He leaves behind his wife, Patricia.
