January 2014
Dear Members/Friends
geheue oproep. Te veel om hier op te noem.
Looking back at 2013 we can certainly be proud of our achievements. The quality and variety of our
exhibitions and many other events were all cultural highlights. During the year we shall fondly
remember the exhibition openings, the happy encounters and the sheer pleasure of sharing time with
friends and art lovers.
On Friday, 18 January 2013, the Association of Arts Pretoria started the year’s exciting events in the
Mackie Street art gallery with its annual Members’ Exhibition. More than 100 members participated
and the exhibition was a sparkling show-case of creative talents and ingenuity.
Wayne Vivier, a very talented young artist with exciting philosophical ideas which he instils in his
works, drew inspiration from The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004), a comedy-drama feature film
directed by Wes Anderson. Anderson’s film is a refreshing journey into the realm of the perhaps distant
and sadly forgotten patterns and life-world of childhood. Wayne's exhibition ran from 15 February to 6
March 2013.
Having been encouraged to enlarge a maquette of 10 cm to a sculpture of 120 cm, Amalie von Maltitz
embarked on a series of further works in this vein in her exhibition on 24 May 2013. Over several years,
she had perfected the technique of using coils of stoneware clay, which she could apply to create a
growing number of vertical compositions. Not only was this method an advantage in creating large
hollow works in clay, which facilitated their drying and being fired, but it also made it possible to
explore the inside forms of the piece, through the openings which could be incised.
heuglike gebeurtenis.
André is alombekend as onoortreflike spotprenttekenaar.
Professor Pierre
Favourite Things was an exhibition of small paintings on wood and photo paper by Kobus Walker on 21
June 2013. They captured our love for food, the presence of people around us and interacted with nature
through landscapes. These sensitive works by Kobus created a sense of familiarity by means of portraits
next to everyday objects, memory landscapes and local brand names. A familiarity that is enhanced by
the fact that in his work, the influence of impressionism and pointillism is delightfully combined with
his own style - influences he remoulded to a personal statement in a contemporary context.
John Clarke's unique refined works of stones, poles and other objects were visually extremely gratifying
and created the eerie atmosphere of a moon landscape. They conveyed a particular vision distilled from
the experience of travelling, collecting and recording over many years. He has been cognizant of
geological forms, the arid vastness of areas, mining activity, battlefields, domestic structures, and the
artefacts and detritus of past and present inhabitants. To Gather investigated the close interplay between
inside and outside spaces. His exhibition ran from 16 August to 4 September 2013.
Mike Edwards, distinguished sculptor, printmaker, painter and art instructor with many solo
exhibitions in South Africa and overseas on his slate. His works are included in a large number of public
and private collections. Last year he celebrated his 75th birthday. For this festive event, the Association
of Arts Pretoria invited a number of his former students and colleagues to exhibit together with Mike,
some of their works as a tribute to his role as teacher, mentor and inspiring artist. The exhibition took
place from 13 September to 2 October 2013.
gevoelighede vertoon
.
ART COMPETITIONS
The 2013 Sasol New Signatures Art Competition
Pretoria Art Museum
28 August to 13 October
Recognised as the longest running national art competition in South Africa, the annual Sasol New
Signatures art competition offers an opportunity for emerging artists to build their profile in the
industry. Each year, the competition raises the bar, and last year notable improvements were seen from
the works submitted. Close to 450 entries were received and 97 were shortlisted for final judging.
Clinching the title, Dot Vermeulen’s piece titled, Desperately Disciplined depicted the mobile nature of
images and how it fits into the contemporary visual culture. She received R60 000,00 and an opportunity
to host a solo exhibition at the Pretoria Arts Museum during 2014. According to the 2013 Sasol New
Signatures Judges Report, her painting, juxtaposed by a digital screen, mounted on a stand in front of
the painting, offered a quiet interplay between the digital world and the traditional canvas. The process
of traditional painting was captured in the form of digital animation.
The runner-up, Jacques Andre du Toit, walked away with R20 000,00, for his winning piece titled KYK!
Ek skiet tennisballe waub .. waub waub waub .. waub w. The artist’s unique work was visual language in the
form of crude drawings and ‘mind doodles’. These drawings were combined and traditionally mounted
in a frame behind glass.
The five Merit Award winners were, Liberty Charlotte Battson, Theko Boshomane, Haroon Gunn-Salie
& Alfred Kamanga (a collaborative piece), Lindi Lombard and Karen Pretorius who each received
R5 000,00.
The 2013 PPC Cement Young concrete Sculptor Awards Competition
Association of Arts Pretoria
7 to 19 November
Concrete was taken to a new level at the 2013 PPC Cement Young Concrete Sculptor Awards (YCSA)
awards evening on 7 November 2013.
Innovation, technical excellence and strong conceptual
presentation were attributes of the 123 entries submitted; the highest number of submissions to date.
The 28 year old Josua Strümpfer, was the winner of the award for the Best Sculpture on Exhibition. The
judging panel praised his work entitled Kunsarbeid for its complexity in both design and execution. The
sculpture featured a labyrinth with a concrete animal skull at the top.
“The labyrinth panels are symbolic of our journey in life. Our lives are not only metaphorically
channeled by cement structures, but also literally,” he explained.
The winner of the Functional Art Award was St. John Fuller for his piece, PUG. Fuller built a fully
functional pinhole camera, based on the original camera obscura. The precision necessary to construct the
camera without any leakages stunned the judges.
The runner-up in the fine art category was a a collaborative work entitled, The unfair servant, by Bongani
Dlamini & Ncedani Fobo. The work was been applauded by the judges for raising thought-provoking
questions around society in South Africa.
Merit Awards went to Adriaan Petrus Diederichs for his delicate piece, Hand tot mond, and to Nicholas
Prinsloo for his detailed installation, The lights of Arcadia. A Certificate of Recognition was also awarded
to Gavin John Risi for his work, Metaphorical African. The PPC Facebook Fan’s Favorite award went to
Setlamorago Mashilo for his artwork entitled, Mabu a u tswitswe.
INTERNATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS
Our French Connection - 'Dialogues' 2012/2013
In 2011, the South African National Association for the Visual Arts (SANAVA) and its French
counterpart, the Conseil National Français des Arts Plastiques (CNFAP) entered into a 'Dialogues'
partnership with the objective of arranging reciprocal exhibitions of visual arts in 2012 and 2013. Both
these organizations are registered non-governmental bodies and members of the International
Association of Art (IAA/AIAP), a NGO partner of UNESCO.
Co-incidentally, and much to the pleasure of SANAVA and the CNFAP, the France-South African
Seasons 2012 and 2013 programme for the exchange of the arts between the two countries was
established on official level. Approval was granted to include the 'Dialogues' project in the Seasons
Programme. This was immediately welcomed since the 'Dialogues' venture in every respect, echoes the
same purpose and objects of the broader France-South Africa programme.
To initiate the 'Dialogues' partnership, SANAVA in 2012 hosted an exhibition of French artists in the
Mackie Street Gallery of the Association of Arts, Pretoria. The French exhibition was a huge success and
aroused much public interest. Three French lady artists visited and had the opportunity to be introduced
to a selection of well-established local artists.
During 2013, as part of the SA Season in France, SANAVA organised an exhibition of works by 38 South
African selected artists in the Orangerie of the Senate, one of the most exquisite venues in the French
capital. The exhibition was hosted by CNFAP and took place from 5 June 2013 to 16 June 2013. Pieter
van Heerden, Director of the Association of Arts Pretoria was the curator and he was accompanied by
Avitha Sooful, Lynette ten Krooden and Anton Loubser.
Of special interest was the inclusion of works of previous winners of the Gerard Sekoto award which is
annually offered by the French Embassy , the Institut Français and the Alliancence Français in South
Africa. Many of the participating artists were former residents of the Cité Internationale des Arts Paris
where, since 1982/1984, SANAVA enjoys occupational rights in three studios for its visual art members
who want to benefit from a sojourn in the French capital.
The participating artists were: Janine Allen, Philip Badenhorst, Hanneke Benadé, Tanisha Bhana, Ben
Botma, John F C Clarke, Johan Conradie, Carla Crafford, Cleone Cull, Maureen De Jager, Frikkie
Eksteen, Retha Ferguson, Penny George, Pauline Gutter, Carl Jeppe, Marlise Keith, Gregory Kerr, Amita
Makan, Amelia Malatji, Estelle Marais, Isabel Mertz, Aleta Michaletos, Gwen Miller, Daniel Mosako,
Craig Muller, André Naudé, Bongumenzi Ngobese, Vulindlela Nyoni, Malose Pete, Annette Pretorius,
Themba Shibase, Peter Sibanda, Bambo Sibiya, Avitha Sooful, Jaco Spies, Lynette ten Krooden, Strijdom
van der Merwe and Diane Victor.
We received the following email from Paris:
Dear Anton and Dear Pieter
The manager of the Senate's Orangerie exhibition hall just informed us that they have registered 22,000 visitors of
the DIALOGUES exhibition between June 5th and June 16th. This is setting up a record : they had never had such
a high number of visitors for a single event.
Moreover the manager told us that many of their regular and accustomed visitors have qualified the exposition as
one the best shows they had seen at the Orangerie.
It is the right reward for all our efforts and the talents of the artists you had picked up: bravo to everyone.
With my best regards
Anne
'Dialogues' 2013 will be on exhibition at the Association of Arts Pretoria from Friday, 14 February 2014
to Wednesday, 1 March 2014 and also at the Innibos National Arts Festival during the first week in July
2014.
Exhibition of ‘South African women artists in Namibia'
Since 2010, special efforts are being made by the National Art Gallery of Namibia (NAGN) in Windhoek
to promote the visual arts in that country by organising exhibitions of work by women artists, not only
in Namibia but also in neighbouring countries. These efforts enjoy the full support of the South African
National Association for the Visual Arts (SANAVA), as demonstrated by the 2012 exhibition by
Namibian Women artists in the art gallery of the Association of Art Pretoria.
As a follow up to that initiative, the NAGN invited SANAVA and its branch, the Association of Arts
Pretoria to hold an exhibition of work by South African women artists at the NAGN during August
2013.
The exchange of these exhibitions strengthened ties between South Africa and Namibia in the field of the
visual arts, and further encouraged the reciprocal sharing of skills between women artists in these two
countries. These initiatives compliment efforts to further a structured spirit of solidarity among visual
artists in this part of the Africa Region, which is an important objective of the International Association
of Art (IAA), a NGO of Unesco.
Paid-up SANAVA branches and affiliated organizations were invited to supply the organizers with the
names of South African women artists for the exhibition. This resulted in an exhibition of works by well
known and not so well known women artists from across South Africa which was held at the National
Art Gallery of Namibia and opened by Pieter van Heerden on Friday, 9 August 2013.
This is an extract from Pieter's opening address:
Ek wil dadelik sê dis lekker om weer in Namibië te wees. Suid Afrika en Namibië se naelstringe is verbonde - die
lande het dieselfde politieke en kulturele agtergronde. Inderdaad, van alle Afrika lande, is Namibië en Suid Afrika
suster-lande en 'n uitstalling soos hierdie bevestig ons familie-verbintenis.
Tonight's exhibition carries a strong political message. Today, 9 August is a public holiday in South Africa to
celebrate the role of women in the struggle against Apartheid. More particularly it commemorates the women's
march in 1956 to the Union Buildings to protest against the pass-laws. This is why it is so appropriate to have this
exhibition today.
Liberation of women is an ongoing quest and challenge, since in many communities women are still denied full
dignity and the benefit of human rights. The drafters of the Namibian Constitution felt so strongly about sexual
discrimination that it is mentioned first and foremost in the list of unlawful discriminating practices such as
colour, descent, etc.
But tonight's exhibition also has a strong cultural and aesthetic message. Previously, especially in the 19th
Century, male artists were dominant in South Africa as well as in Namibia. Women artists were more or less
relegated to crafts, bead works and fibre art. The 20th century saw a drastic change with women artists such as the
Everard-sisters, Maud Sumner, Bettie Cilliers-Barnard and Irma Stern who not only became a rejuvenating,
modern force, but also established an own identity. What you see tonight, is a confirmation of that identity, women
who are proud of their womanhood and who understand life on a deep emotional level.
Personally, I am hesitant to speak of 'women's art' because I am convinced that art is simply art. But on the other
hand, there are a sensitivity and a special feeling for colour and tones in the works of women artists that cannot be
ignored. However, I leave this to you the viewers, to investigate the works and conclude whether there are such a
category of 'women's art'.
Matters of interest
About the relationship between painting & photography
Dylan Graham and Alet Pretorius who had an exhibition in the Galerie Chaton on 31 May 2013 said the
following about the relationship between painting & photography:
Painting and Photography have influenced each other through history.
From the painterly images
produced by the first photographers to the impressionist painters trying to capture the same decisive
moment as photography.
Paul Delaroche apparently exclaimed “From today painting is dead” on seeing one of the 1st
Daguerreotypes. But the opposite happened. Photography invigorated painting. New styles arrived in
response to photography. Since the beginning of photography, photographers were influenced by
painting. The two disciplines developed in their own directions but influenced each other along the
way.
Dylan and Alet have been partners for 6 years. Not only do they have a huge influence on each other
but also on their respective work. Both work with and from reality but translate it through their
respective art. Observation is the key to photography and painting. While Alet waits for elements to
align to make her images, Dylan’s work takes shape while he is observing.
By combining these elements Alet and Dylan have produced work that is at once a representation of
reality and the negation of this reality. By photographing or painting something from life you are
representing a reality. There is an almost altered, ambiguous reality that occurs when these
representations are combined. The result is a dreamlike whimsical image.
daardie stadium was Rex se gesondheidstoestand uiters kommerwekkend. Die skenking op 21 Junie
2013 was 'n ongelooflike sukses.
Ons leef in ‘n wêreld waar die WONDERWERK van die LEWE self – slegs WERK geword het. Waar die wonder;
skenk ” The act of Giving”
As jy gee, gee jy onvoorwaardelik,
nie net aan die met blou oë of die wat soos jy is nie.
You give because the Lifeforce in you is propelling you to give!

55th Venice Biennale lecture
presented by artist and lecturer Johan Conradie
The Association of Arts Pretoria will host 2 lectures on the 55th Venice Biennale by artist and lecturer,
Johan Conradie on Thursday, 20 February 2014, 19h00 to 20h30 and Thursday, 27 March 2014, 19h00 to
20h30.
This will be the third time that Conradie presents his highly visual account (with notes) of the highlights
of the most important and authoritative arts event in the world, at the Association of Arts Pretoria.
Conradie has been organising art tours to the Venice Biennale since 2005, and recently took a group of
art lovers to the 2013 Normandy Impressionist Festival. With such an abundance of contemporary art
on display, the Venice Biennale offers an overwhelming experience.
The purpose of the lecture is to provide everyone in and around Pretoria with the rare opportunity to
engage with current International art trends through Conradie’s PowerPoint presentation and
‘accessible’ approach. This is an absolute must for all art lovers, art students and artists that want to
improve their own conceptual understanding of contemporary art today.
The 55th Venice Biennale entitled The Encyclopedic Palace, was curated by curator and contemporary art
critic, Massimiliano Gioni. Much more than presenting us with a list of contemporary artists’ the
director wished to reflect on their creative urges and pushes the question even further: "What is the
artists’ world?"
Gioni has conceived the exhibition as a gathering of individuals:
obsessive's, the anonymous creator and celebrated outsider.
Visionaries, misfits, mystics,
Instead of the usual sprawling
unstructured hodgepodge of some of the previous Biennales, we find an intelligent, well-argued
position in Gioni’s exhibition.
Since there are only 30 places available per lecture booking in advance is essential. The cost is R170,00
per person (a 25 page document is included). Phone Nandi on 012 346 3100 or 083 288 5117 or send an
email to [email protected]
Figure Drawing classes 2014
The Figure Drawing classes are presented by Carl Jeppe. He has the following to say about figure
drawing:
“There are numerous reasons why we do figure drawing. Among those reasons are that the human
figure is such a familiar presence, and yet it is so full of surprises, that if we can draw a convincing
image of a human body, with all its expression, all it subtlety, then we are equipped to draw just about
anything. Figure drawing allows us to question our pre-conceived ideas and search for a visual truth; it
emphasises that although we make mistakes, it is possible to fix them, better still, it is possible to
anticipate them and thus avoid them. Figure drawing also underlines our individuality as artists, in that
no two artists seeing the same figure from the same point in space will produce identical drawings. It is
almost a celebration of an artist’s individuality."
These classes will take place every 2nd Wednesday evening from 18h00 to 20h00 on the following dates:
12 February, 26 February, 12 March, 26 March, 9 April, 23 April, 7 May, 21 May, 6 August, 20 August, 3
September, 17 September, 1 October and 15 October. During the months of June, July and November
there will be no classes.
Bring your own materials: a drawing board, sheets of A2 paper, a selection of pencils or charcoal, an
eraser, a sharpener and masking tape.
Cost: R115,00 per person per class.
These classes are very popular and it essential that you book well in advance since we can only
accommodate 20 people per class. Please phone Nandi on 012 346 3100 or email [email protected] to
book your place.
