Capernaum,
hometown of Simon
and Andrew, became
Jesus’ home base
too. On the Sabbath,
he went out to the
synagogue to teach
with authority over
physical and spiritual
evils. He dramatically
cast out devils, curing
Simon’s mother-in-law
and healing many other sick people. Jesus went
about the messianic work. That labour came to
fruition as he cast out death itself in his Passover
to resurrection. Bolstered by prayer, Jesus singlemindedly set out to spread the good news. How do
we join him?

Life is About Discernment
In the second reading, Paul answers questions from
the people of Corinth about vocations in life. At the
heart of his teaching is our need to keep focused on
God no matter what our walk of life is. The key is discerning the life that the Lord has called us to, something we can do if we heed his words.
As we go
about our own respective lives, may God’s word find a
home in our minds and our hearts. May we always
listen for God’s voice and follow Jesus’ teachings
given to us with love and authority.
Our job or profession can be transformed into a
vocation when we go about our work hours, inspired
and influence by the power and love of God in our life.
If you are a lawyer or teacher, the teaching or law profession can be guided by a work ethic that is consonant with the mandate of the Gospel. Usually, our
oath of office defines the pattern of activity we have to
pursue in our respective profession. Work becomes
ministry when it is not really all about the money or
remuneration. Work becomes ministry when we don’t
separate our faith from the office or workplace. Work
becomes ministry when we not only work for a living
but also making a life. When life and faith becomes
integrated, a spirituality emerges. Work becomes
more meaningful when it is unified with our faith life.
Morality or spirituality becomes the principle of our
activity. When the Fathers of the Second Vatican
Council defined the Eucharist as the center and
source of all Christian life, what is being conveyed is
that we have to pattern every effort, every act or
activity to the self-giving and self-sacrificing spirit of
Christ who sacrificed His own life for all of us. A
Eucharist-centered life is a life of self-giving and selfsacrifice.
In our
Responsorial
Psalm (Psalm 95), we
proclaimed: “O that today you would listen to the voice
of the Lord. Do not harden your hearts!” We can listen
to God’s voice only in our silence. God speaks to us
when we create a vacancy for him in our lives. Christ
himself would go to a deserted place early every
morning to be silent with his Father in the midst of his
hectic schedule. This period described as prayer, to
be silent physically as well as spiritually in order to
listen to God.
This is how we acquire our sense of vocation, that is
by shifting our focus from our own activities to God’s
loving presence. We can move our focus from what
we do to what God does in our life and in our world.
In the end, what God does is far more important than
what we do with our life.

BAPTISMS are celebrated outside of Mass every fourth Sunday at
12:15 pm and during Mass on other weekends, that, first Sunday
at 9:00 am, second Sunday at 11:00 am and third weekend on
Saturday at 5:00 pm, Baptisms are discouraged during the Lenten
season. Please call the office to set up an appointment to
register .
WEDDING ARRANGEMENTS are arranged only after an initial
interview with a Priest or Deacon.
THE PASTORAL HEALTH CARE TEAM welcomes the
opportunity to visit and bring the Eucharist to our housebound
parishioners. Please call the Parish office to schedule visits.
SACRAMENTAL PREP DATES: Confirmation: February 22 to
April 11, 2015 and First Eucharist: May 10 to June 7, 2015.
Brochures and registration forms will be available two weeks
before each course is offered.

NEW LIFE CATHOLIC CHARISMATIC COMMUNITY holds

RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) is offered

A Funeral Mass for the late Frederick (Fred)
Adam
Stark, dedicated volunteer as our long-time
sacristan, counter and KC member among others, will be
held on Friday, February 6, 10 am at Sacred Heart
Church. May he rest in peace!
Items in need of donors (not budgeted for 2015): one
(1) remaining stained glass window to be installed in the
columbarium area at $15,000; engineered hard wood
replacement of old carpet floor for the room of priest-inresidence (Fr Gilles Leblanc) at $2,500; revolving
cabinet for missals, CDs and booklets (currently
displayed in the old narthex shelves) to be located in the
new narthex area at $2,300; solar LED signage for the
columbarium to be located in the corner of parking lot at
$13,000 in addition to existing pledge; LED bulbs (190
units) to replace existing bulbs as they burn out at

Women in the Media: Reality versus
Fantasy
Issues of violence against women in the media involve
both a denial of equal access and the perpetuation of
narrow gender stereotypes that portray women as
sexual objects in order to sell products.
Hundreds of women around the world starve themselves to death each year as a result of eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia.
Women are also sent messages by the media that
their self-worth is tied to a relationship with a man.
The fact that the media fails to portray the reality of
women’s daily life and struggles is itself a form of violence. Instead of being a tool to educate both women
and men about the extraordinary contributions women
make and their vast potential as human beings, the
media limits their overall development and healthy
visions of being.

5th ANNUAL MARDI GRAS DINNER AND CAKE
AUCTION FUNDRAISER. The CWL and Knights of
Columbus are proud to sponsor the Mardi Gras Fundraiser in support of the Sacred Heart Church Building
Fund which will take place on Saturday, February 14th
at 6 pm in the Upper Hall. Consider making this a
date night for Valentines Day. Tickets are $25 and
can be purchased starting the weekend of Jan 31st
and Feb 1st after all masses. We will
be enjoying a catered meal. The interactive evening will continue with a cake
auction, entertainment and door prizes.

St Vincent de Paul Society hamper deliveries for
the month of January 2015 is now at 26 and counting,
compared to 16 in 2014 in the same month and 12 in

World Day of Prayer – March 6, 2015 – Service at
10:00 AM with reception to follow. All are welcome
to attend. Volunteers needed!
Sacred Heart is
pleased to be hosting this year’s World Day of Prayer
for our area of Calgary. We need volunteers to join the
women’s inter-church planning committee. World Day
of Prayer is an international Christian women’s prayer
movement, reaching around the world, all across
Canada, throughout Calgary and involving many
Christian Church denominations. Women from this
year’s host country, the Bahamas, chose the theme
“Jesus said to them, “Do you Know What I have done
to You?” (John 13: 1- 17 (NRSV). Our area’s InterChurch committee of women will be coming together
over the next several weeks to plan and participate in
the service being hosted at Sacred Heart Church.

The
Confirmation
Program
(Grade 6 & up), will run from
February 22 to April 11, 2015. An
information meeting will be held on
Sunday, February 22 at 12 pm in
the church where
registration
forms are finalized, packages
explained and clarifications made. Candidates as well
as
parents attend this meeting. Reflection sessions
follow every Sunday at 11 am with the candidates
while parents attend the Mass at the end of which a
short catechesis is given. Candidates choose a
saint’s name, and a sponsor who helps in the preparation, and presents him or her during the celebration.
Activities include Rosary-making night and a Retreat.
A letter to the Bishop is required, which should include
a written report on an outreach activity. Candidates
also represent the community in the Washing of the
Feet on Holy Thursday. Bishop Frederick Henry
celebrates the Sacrament of Confirmation on Saturday,
April 30 at 7 pm. Family and guests are invited to join
the Confirmandi at a potluck reception held immediately after the celebration.
Fr Lucien Larre will facilitate a Lenten Mission on
March 2-5 (Monday - Thursday) with Mass at 7 pm,
followed by a talk. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament starts at 5:30 pm, followed by Recitation of the
Holy Rosary at 6:30 pm. He will preach in all Masses
on the February 28-March 1 weekend. He will also
speak during the Worship with the Charismatic Group
on
Sunday, March 1, 2-4 pm.

the Stations of the Cross on the Lenten Fridays and Good
Friday. This is a way of reflecting on Christ’s passion,
death and resurrection. This is an excellent form of
penance and prayer.

families never again experience violence, rejection
and division: may all who have been hurt or scandalized
find ready comfort and healing. Holy Family of Nazareth,
may the approaching Synod of Bishops make us once
more mindful of the sacredness and inviolability of the
family, and its beauty in God’s plan. Jesus, Mary and
Joseph, graciously hear our prayer. Amen.
