CATHEDRAL MEN’S GROUP
TUESDAY APRIL 14 AT 7:15 PM
Men of the Cathedral parish, you are invited to join the Cathedral
Men's Group. If you are Christ-centered and interested in
improving yourself check us out. We discuss the topics of today,
how we men are affected, and what the Bible teaches us
regarding today's issues. We meet every second Tuesday of the
month in the Cathedral Lower Level at 7:15 p.m. Join us this
Tuesday, April 14.
Many overlook the seasonal changes that we make to enhance
our liturgies at the Cathedral. The Easter flower decorations had
that noble simplicity quality that the General Instruction for the
Roman Missal asks us to strive for. Flowers were kept to a
minimum (for sensitive noses) yet the overall effect was stunning
and large enough for the
Cathedral’s space. Kudos to
the flower team that
included Chris Houlemard,
the McCreight family
whose kids Sean and Moira
served at the Cathedral over
1 0 years ago, and
especially Bloem Decor
that
provided
the
arrangements and vases.
Just look at the ones at the
tabernacle and the altar!
Did you notice the discrete
fl o we r s a r o u n d t h e
baptismal font or the ring
around the top of the Easter
Candle stand?
Alleluia, He is Risen!

A Change of Heart
N
A CTS 4:32-35 • 1 J N 5:1-6 • JN 20:19-31
ational Geographic, in its January 2015 issue,
had a section titled, “Looking Ahead.” Byron
Reese, a tech entrepreneur, predicted that within
20 years we will see dramatic improvements in our way of life.
He wrote that technological improvements “meant that soon
we will be able to solve all the problems that are
fundamentally technical.. .including disease, poverty, hunger,
energy and scarcity.” He wrote too that technological
“advances will usher in a new golden age, freed from the
scourges that have plagued humanity through-out our
history.”
Technology forecaster Paul Saffo wrote,
“Digital technology is the solvent leaching
the glue out of our global structure—
including shaking our belief systems to the
core.”
MY LORD
illustration greatly oversimplifies, but it helps us understand our
passage from Acts.
Luke paints a picture of a community in which all human needs
are met. He is passing on Jesus' teaching that, while possessions
and wealth are perfectly OK, they bring responsibility. We can be
rich while still improving the lives of those around us.
Unfortunately, we do not usually see our possessions as creating a
Christian responsibility to care for “widows and orphans.” Worse,
even most of our churches struggle finan-cially because we do not
make the connection Luke gives us. We do
AND MY OD not connect that what we have is the result of
God’s blessing, so we fail to make a return to
the Lord.
G
Technology will not open shut-up human
hearts. Luke tells us precisely what will:
faith in Jesus Christ and in the vision of the
kingdom of God. Luke said, “The
community of believers was of one heart
and mind.”
There is a warning here.
While Utopia is a human ideal, the
problem is, if we become our own gods,
believing we can solve all of humanities
problems by ourselves, we will no longer
need God. Technological advances might
truly solve many of the world’s problems;
however, technology is not a belief system.
Paul Saffo is correct because we are already
witnessing a deterioration of our fundament
belief systems, and this trend might
certainly continue. Unfortunately no
system is taking the place of what has provided our core beliefs.
Technology can solve many problems; but technology cannot
move the human heart. At their root, poverty, hunger and scarcity
are problems of the human heart. There is already enough food to
feed the world, but the human heart seems to stumble when it
comes to sharing.
There is enough money in Americans' pockets to solve the problem
of poverty in our own country, but too many human hearts do not
want to put their blessings to work for others. The Church does not
advocate socialism—taking from the rich and giving to the poor.
We do not need socialism, we just need to use our possessions as
God intended.
The Jewish sense of material items was that there was a finite
amount of all things. For example, there are only so many soccer
balls. While there might be enough for everyone to have one or
two or even three, if someone is hoarding soccer balls, some will
to go without. It’s OK to have more than one soccer ball as long as
we are not preventing someone else from having one. This
THOMAS
What the early Christians became known for
was how they cared for others. This one
attribute won more people to Christ than any
other. This attribute was how the apostles
“bore witness to the resurrection of the Lord
Jesus.” The apostles and the community
allowed faith to change their hearts.
What changed the hearts of the followers of
Christ? It was Jesus’ sacrificial love. He died on the cross as an act
of pure love. This event changed hearts, and Luke connected
sacrificial
love to Christ’s Resurrection. The Resurrection was a consequence
of the sacrificial love of Jesus. The consequence of giving witness
to this love, that is, imitating it, will enable us to create a more
perfect Christian community.
We can allow ourselves to believe that we could never create this
kind of community of faith. It’s a good thing we have Thomas!
We find solace in his doubts. Although Thomas didn’t doubt that
Jesus was the Son of God, he did doubt the Resurrection.
Thomas's encounter with the Risen Christ not only convinced
him, it committed him to the way of Christ.
We should use our Easter Season to help us encounter the Risen
Christ so that we might once more commit ourselves to building
the world God envisions. And, it is a blessing if technology can
help us.
