The songs are listed in the bulletin and lyrics are projected on our screen. We also have booklets with music notation available as well. We encourage you to join in, but do not feel obligated; you can just sit and listen. Lord's Supper: Communion is a part of our worship each week. In this simple memorial we remember Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross and we also emphasize the central place of the cross in our faith. Offering: The work at Denbigh is supported totally by the free-will offerings of our members. Our guests are not expected to make a donation. Preaching: The sermon will be about 20-25 minutes long and centered in Scripture. If our study raises questions, please feel free to ask the minister or one of the elders. After the sermon an invitation will be offered for those with a prayer request or desire for baptism. At this time, we will stand and sing a song. Please don’t feel uncomfortable; you will not be singled out in any way. Children’s Church: At some point during each morning assembly (usually before the sermon) children ages 2-5 will be dismissed to a class for a special lesson. An attended nursery is also provided. Usually at this time, we will take a few minutes to stand and greet each other. In Matthew 16, right after Peter’s “good confession,” Jesus begins to teach the apostles that he would be turned over to his enemies, killed and raised again. In fact, Matthew ties this to the confession, “From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples…” (Matt 16:21). Peter’s initial response was obstinate disbelief… not in Jesus but that this fate could possibly await him. Jesus repeats this same prediction in Matthew 17:22-23, and the apostles are “filled with grief.” In our reading last Tuesday, Jesus again predicts the coming cross (Matt 20:1719). There is no record this time of how the apostles respond. Or is there? The very next thing Matthew records is the attempted power grab by James and John to get them the best cabinet position in Jesus’ new administration (Matt 20:20-23). Right after Jesus predicts the coming cross, the apostles were seeking positions of power and influence. They just didn’t get it! If what Jesus wanted was to sit on a throne, then he could have just stayed on the throne of heaven! He came to earth not as King but as Savior, and that meant going to the cross. In our early daily readings, Jesus is trying to prepare his disciples and friends for this, but they didn’t get it. Do we get it? Do we really put the cross and its message at the center of our faith? Do we live like Christ’s sacrifice for our sin is the whole point of His coming and of our worship? There are a lot of things that people seem to think that was the point of Jesus coming that was not the point at all: Jesus didn’t come to make us happy. He didn’t come to make us wealthy. His purpose was not to give us a problem free life. His goal was not to give us a better form of government. Jesus came to die on the cross to save us from our sins; he came to be raised from the dead to give us victory over death. Jesus calls us to alter our lives based on the truth of his person and his mission. He didn’t just die on the cross—he calls us to live crucified lives (1 John 3:16-17). He wasn’t just raised from the dead, he calls us to live raised lives that daily reflect his new reality (Rom 6:11). Jesus ends this story in Matthew 20 by reminding us of his mission and how we are to be transformed by that mission– Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. READING: ________________________________________________________________ For the new year we are looking forward to having our sessions in different sisters’ homes. On Monday, February 16, we have the pleasure of meeting at Renee West’s home at 6:00 p.m. She has graciously offered to prepare dinner so you can come right from work and enjoy an evening with your sisters. Please let Renee know that you are coming and prayerfully consider hosting one of the upcoming sessions. (Providing dinner is not a mandatory requirement). Budget and Money Matters This past Tuesday, 12 people from two of our small groups helped serve a hot meal and give groceries to about 90 needy folks from our area. What a blessing we receive when we extend the love of Jesus to others! The People with Purpose group has agreed to take this on as a monthly project, with the first Tuesday evening of the month being our assigned night. HEALTH CONCERNS:. Five Loaves Service Project Prayer Concerns _____________________________________________ Put this in the bulletin? So, we won’t talk about the last 20 seconds of the big game (unless you’re a Pats fan). But we can talk about some of the other winners of the night. The teens Souper Bowl of Caring raised $877 to be donated to Five Loaves Ministry! Thank you all for your generosity in that effort. The cookoff winners were: 3rd Place, Esther Stevens’ Texas Caviar; 2nd Place, Audrey Briggs’ BBQ; and 1st Place, Rachel Bean’s White Pizza Dip. All the entries were delicious and the judging was close. The scores of the Trivia Challenge were also very close but David Stevens squeaked past Tressa Tucker by 1 point. Awards were also handed out to the Denbigh Fantasy Football League, which had 20 players this year. Sweetheart Dinner Serving Member Card News and Notes of Interest
