Thoughts for The Week of February 1, 2015
Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Mark 1:21-28
“What Have You to Do with Us, Jesus of Nazareth (v 24).”
Jesus never directly answered the unclean spirit’s question, but He
did exercise His power over it and exorcised it from the possessed
man. I think every now and then we need to step back and ask that
same question of Jesus.
I think Jesus’s answer would go something like this: “I have a
great deal to do with you. I redeemed you at the cost of my life. I am
with you all the time for whenever you need me. In times of trouble I
have been known to pick you up and carry you (see the poem
“Footsteps).”
Let’s look a little deeper into this. Jesus is our Lord and Savior.
He gave us Himself in the Holy Eucharist. He gave us the priesthood
so that the Eucharist is available to us today. He gave His apostles the
power to forgive sins so that we can be sorry for our sins, receive reconciliation at the hands of Jesus’s representative, the priest, and be
ready to worthily receive the Eucharist.
Married couples receive the graces of the Sacrament of Matrimony
sanctified by Jesus. Priests receive the power of their office by virtue
of the command Jesus gave to the apostles to “do this in memory of
me (Luke 22:19).” Of course Jesus said this in reference to the Eucharist, but it could also apply to his instruction to the apostles: “ . . .
whose sins you forgive they are forgiven (John 20:23).”
Jesus is with us at times of illness and at the hour of death as we
receive the Sacrament of Anointing. And in speaking to St. John,
“Son, behold thy mother (John 19:27)”, He gave Mary to us as our
mother, also.
So in retrospect, I think the simple answer to our question to Jesus,
“What have You to do with us?” is “EVERYTHNG!”
God bless you. Rev. Joseph A. Emmanuel

Making All Things New
“Mission, Not Maintenance, Should Be Our Focus”
A Message from Cardinal Timothy Dolan (Part One)
(From the Catholic New York)
Over the last couple of days, I received a number of e-mails asking if I
had seen the front page article in the Wall Street Journal of SaturdaySunday, January 3-4, 2015. No, I had not, since my physician, to lower my
blood pressure, had advised me to avoid salt and newspapers. However,
given the inquiries from some folks, I thought I had better take a look at it.
The article was headlined, “Europe’s Empty Churches Go on Sale,”
and narrated how the grave decline in Catholic practice had sadly led the
bishops and pastors in classically fervent Catholic European countries
(France, Holland and Germany, for instance) to close and sell thousands of
churches, which were now largely empty and too costly to maintain.
“Is this what you’re bringing to us,” the angry correspondents asked
me, “with this stupid, silly Making All Things New, and the senseless mergers of our parishes?”
Praying for patience, I replied, “No, its actually what we’re trying to
avoid.”

From The Knights of Columbus
Lourdes Council 5890 — Washingtonville, NY
Dear Rev. Joseph Emmanuel: On behalf of the children and their families, who have participated in our
Lourdes program enabling them to go on pilgrimage to
the Marian Shrine in Lourdes, France, and all of the
members of Our Lady of Lourdes Council 5890, we thank
all the parishioners of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish for
their generosity and support.
Without their sacrifices, our efforts would not yield the
results we have achieved over the years.
May the graces and blessings bestowed upon these
children during their pilgrimage be shared by the countless thousands (including your wonderful parishioners)
who have made this experience of a lifetime become a
reality.
Sincerely,
Walter H. Kozolowski, PKG, FDD, Co-chairman

Your continued generosity and support are always appreciated.
Harry Langworthy was a know-it–all and his
boss was getting fed up with it, especially with
his claim that he knew all sorts of famous people. “OK, Harry,” his boss said one day,
“Prove that you know famous people. Do you know Tom
Cruise?” “Oh, sure,” said Harry, “me and Tom go way back.”
Intrigued, Harry’s boss flew both of them to Hollywood, and
pretty soon they were knocking at Tom Cruise’s door. The
butler let them in and Tom Cruise rushed to greet them.
“How’s it going, Harry,” he said. “Long time, no see.” They all
had lunch together discussing movies.
Then, in Washington, D.C. after a pleasant lunch with
Barack Obama and Michelle, Harry’s boss was suitably impressed, but he was not giving up. “OK, Harry, if you know the
Pope then I’ll admit you know everyone.” “Off to the Vatican,”
crowed Harry.
The two of them wandered through St. Peter’s Square in a
crowd of thousands, and Harry said, “Heck, Benedict won’t be
able to see us from here. You wait here and watch the balcony. About ten minutes later, the upstairs balcony opened and
there was Harry standing next to a man dressed all in white.
Both waved to the crowd.
The boss said to an old Italian woman next to him, “Scusi,
but can you tell me if that man dressed all in white is really
Pope Benedict XVI?”
The woman said to him in her broken English, “You meana
the guy standing next to Harry Langworthy”?
