February 1st - Fulbourn and the Wilbrahams

St Vigor, Fulbourn; St Nicholas, Great
Wilbraham; St John, Little Wilbraham; and
St George, Six Mile Bottom
Diocese of Ely
Sunday 1st February 2015
Presentation of Christ
Welcome! We are a group of four churches in the
diocese of Ely seeking to worship God faithfully, and to
serve Him in all that we do. If you are visiting or if this
is your first time worshipping with us, we would love
to meet you. Welcome!
Almighty and ever-living God,
clothed in majesty,
whose beloved Son was this day presented in the
Temple, in substance of our flesh:
grant that we may be presented to you
with pure and clean hearts,
by your Son Jesus Christ our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and forever.

Fellowship Groups
The coming of the Lord to His Temple is properly
understood as a manifestation of unimaginable glory,
evoking fear and awe. ‘Who can endure the day of His
coming?’ asks Malachi. ‘Who can stand when He
appears? For He will be like a refiner’s fire’. Even the
most far-sighted visionary to recognize the coming of
Jesus the Messiah thought of His appearance in much
these terms: ‘He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit
and with fire.’ Yet today we meet a different version
of God’s glory: rather than the awesome fire of the
Presence, the sublime terror of the Angel, we meet a
vulnerable baby. The very Priests who meditate on the
words of Ezekiel and Malachi, the Sons of Levi who
Malachi says are to be purified, do not notice His
arrival: only a few elderly eccentrics. Simeon the
Righteous does not fall face down in fear. This is not
God beyond us, God the Other, dwelling in
unapproachable light, but Emmanuel, God-with-us.
Simeon does the unimaginable: holds God in his arms
with tender, intimate affection. Let us pray this
Candlemas that we too can be eccentric enough to
see Christ in the weakest among us, and to greet Him
fearlessly with joy when He comes: and let us pray
that, even as we keep Him at the centre of our lives,
we keep watch for His arrival at the fringes of our
vision, on the periphery of the crowd.
