LENT STEWARDSHIP FOCUS: FISHES AND LOAVES
Once again, we will use Lent as a time to raise Fishes and Loaves before you as a Stewardship focus. Our
Fishes and Loaves Fund is used to assist members and neighbors alike with bills and expenses that are beyond
their ability to pay at the moment.
In the community, the Fishes and Loaves resources has enabled us to help neighbors and strangers alike
with fuel bills, electric bills, food bills, medicine costs, clothing needs, motel lodging and numerous other
expenses. It has also enabled us to meet various needs of some in our own congregation.
You have been most generous in years past, enabling us to share thousands of dollars annually with
people in times of need and crisis. Please remember to give us the resources to help moving forward.

Finishing the Task
Serving Today and Tomorrow
This is the theme for the new three
year campaign that began in January
2015. Designed by Carol Sweigart,
the logo identifies the campaign’s
primary focus - Finishing the Task
(Mortgage) and also illustrates the
varied “faces” of Holy Trinity and the
surrounding community we serve.
To date, we have received 40 pledges totaling
$153, 452 and nine individuals have stated they will give
as able. Three years ago (January 2012), the mortgage
amount stood at $412,000 and with the concerted response
from Holy Trinity’s congregation, the mortgage was reduced to $188,000 by December 31, 2014. And due to this
wonderful response, at the January Congregation Council
meeting, the Congregation Council approved the Finance
Committee’s recommendation to make another $15,000
payment toward the mortgage principal. With this additional payment and the regular January monthly payment,
the mortgage amount has been reduced further to
$169,357. Thank you!
We have now paid off more than 58% of the original
ten-year mortgage, and we estimate there will be a savings
of $30,000 in interest charges if the remaining mortgage is
paid off by the end of 2017 – the last year of this campaign. What a joy when we reach that point and funds can
be directed toward other needed programs and ministries.

On behalf of the Board of Directors of EASS, the staff and
those we serve I want to acknowledge the recent financial
contribution made to EASS. We are grateful for the continued support of our mission. We are better able to do what we
do because of your faith and trust in us. During September
EASS distributed food to 204 families helping 686 people.
283 people benefited from the Clothing Bank. We provided
121 rides through the Transportation Service. We also helped
14 new families, having 44 members. 12 families (34 family
members) benefited from our Emergency Financial Assistance Program expending $901.73 in financial assistance to
help with prescriptions, home heating fuel, and electric payments to prevent disconnections and with overnight lodging.
With your support we are able to continue meeting the challenge. We continue to seek donations of food for the food
bank. We are also in the middle of our annual fund drive
that helps families with their home heating and electric
service shortfalls.
Sincerely, Tom Swalwell,
Exec. Dir. EASS

Dear Holy Trinity,
I wish to send a heartfelt “thank you” to all
who remembered me with prayers, cards and well
wishes as I went through surgery at the Cleveland
Clinic. My surgeons assured me they removed all the
cancer, but tell me that it may come back. I am feeling
fine and go for check-ups every three months. I have
been attending two different Lutheran Churches. Emmanuel Lutheran of Coshocton and St. Paul Lutheran
of Newcomerstown. The services are different than
Holy Trinity in many ways, but the people are wonderful and have welcomed me openly. My life has taken many changes but God is in control and guiding
me. Love and Blessings to you all from Ohio.

February 2015
We have not talked much about the recent “police involved” deaths of black men in Ferguson, MO and New York.
I have said little about the protests that have erupted after grand
juries in Missouri and New York failed to indict the involved
police officers. On the one hand, these seemed to be issues for
others in Missouri and New York, but really they should be a
concern for all of us.
I have no idea what happened on the street in Ferguson, Missouri that ended with Michael Brown’s death. We do
have a video of the New York incident which raises some
questions about police procedures and level of response to a
man whose crime was apparently selling single “untaxed” cigarettes on the street. The alleged crime certainly did not seem to
warrant the level of police response, but I was not there, and
videotapes have their limits. There is always more to the story.
I have great respect for the job that police do. Even in
“small town” Ephrata, danger can lurk around the next corner.
It is a task with great stress. We tend to look at the police only
when we have a need or when one officer proves that he/she is
human and makes a mistake. The truth, though, is that Ferguson and New York are symptoms of a far bigger problem that
goes beyond the police and individuals who break the law. Our
system is terribly dysfunctional. Far too often wealth and power shape the outcomes of the judicial process rather than justice
and the truth. One can argue endlessly and passionately that
our system is one of “justice for all”, and I would say that is a
delusion, a dream. The system does not work equally for all
people, and the minorities in America, who are quite often the
poor and the powerless, know that better than we do. The reality is, if our judicial system fails one because of poor resources
or opportunity, then we are all at risk. Ferguson and New York
are not just local issues having nothing to do with us here in
Lancaster County. It should be a concern for all of us. Our system does not work equally and justly for all.
The anger of the protestors is real and genuine. I have
never understood the dynamic of burning local businesses as an
act of protest. It struck me as foolish in the 60’s, in LA in the
90’s and now in Ferguson, but do not miss the anger of the
people reflected in the fires.
As the money gap between the rich and poor in America grows, as the middle class continues to decline and be besieged, the anger of people will increase. As certain groups are
denied justice and the basic opportunities to succeed that others
enjoy as matter of fact, anger and resentment will foment, just
waiting for a spark to ignite and explode. The deaths of two
black men this summer at the hands of police provided such a
spark. With our leaders either unwilling or unable to grasp the
depth of the anger in our culture, we will see more and more
explosions of anger in communities.
There are no easy or quick solutions to what faces us as
a nation. The police will have to be far more focused on their
relationships with minority communities and with how they
exercise power. Minority groups are going to have to give up
violence and crime among their numbers, but such changes
alone will not solve the problems before us.
The healing of our nation will only begin when we
each recognize that we have a role to play, that each of us is
part of the solution. We are all God’s people, each one of us.
God’s love and grace are given to all. God’s grace shall indeed
shape the way each one of us responds to, perceives every other person. Justice and equality will not truly become real for all
until each one of us embraces another as a child loved by God.
God’s universal and unconditional love is not just a
pipedream. It can be experienced by every person in this world.
You and I can not change what happened in Missouri or New
York, but we can impact how we treat those around us. Justice
issues should be a concern for us here in Ephrata as well as for
those living in Ferguson, MO and New York. It should be a
concern because we are all the children of God.
YEAR ROUND STEWARDSHIP
We begin a new church year challenging you to consider Christian Stewardship
from an entirely new perspective. Rather than seeing stewardship as purely a “fundraising” effort conducted each Fall, we hope to reframe and redefine stewardship as
embracing how you live every day with God as your center.
What does it mean to have God at the very center of your life for all the choices
and decisions you make? What does it say about how you manage both your health
as well as about how you share your offerings? What does it say about your diet,
about how you vote, about how you help your neighbors, about the chemicals you
put on the lawn, and the choice of car you purchase?
Stewardship embraces all the choices we make and all the values we embrace in
life, as stewards of God’s creation. Over the course of the coming year, we will
challenge you to consider your life in various ways from a faith perspective. Our
hope is to expand the voice that faith has in your living.

Finance Committee Report
Thank you for your giving to meet the mission, ministry, and operating expenses of Holy Trinity in 2014. As you can see
from the accompanying graph, we finished the year without taking from reserves.
We ask the congregation to accept the challenge of meeting the (small) deficit in the 2015 approved budget. Because of your
response to Trinity’s 2014 needs and because we reduced our benevolence and employees’ benefits, we do not face the budget
crisis we faced last year.. For 2015, we are increasing staff salaries by 2% and their associated increased costs (healthcare, payroll taxes, etc.). We did not increase benevolence and will pledge $10,000., plus our special monthly appeal. Our organ is in
need of repairs and we will begin the process in 2015. These increases are reflected in the 2015 budget and we ask that you
prayerfully consider your response to our ministry and staff of Holy Trinity.

Finance Committee Report
The congregation ended 2014 with a surplus in the Unified Budget fund. For the first time in many years, the Finance Committee does not have to transfer money from savings to balance the expenses for a year.
The giving for the Unified Budget increased 10% in 2014. Thank you for your giving to meet our operational costs and to
provide our ministry. Included in the increase were donations given to Holy Trinity due to the benevolence of deceased members.
Contributing to our surplus were the efforts of our staff and committees to limit expenses. Total expenses were a bit under
budget. Also, recall that our staff made a significant contribution to the 2014 budget in that no staff member received a pay
increase last year.
We also recognize that that some members contributed money beyond the budget for some of our ministry projects. This
additional “off record” giving enabled the limiting of our expenses.
The committee was fearful entering 2014 about the financial challenge facing the congregation. Again, we express deep appreciation and thanks to our members for meeting the financial challenge. We ask for your continued financial support as we seek
to keep a balanced budget while continuing our ministries, appropriately compensating our staff, and caring for our property.

COMMUNITY MEAL
UP-DATE
The community meal program in
Ephrata, continues to be an important
part of the ministry here at Holy
Trinity. There are a number of people
who help with food preparation, food
and monetary donation, and also
coming out to help serve. The more
people that help, the more successful
the program is. The help that we get
is greatly appreciated. The meal program in Ephrata
continues to grow. A weekly Thursday Evening meal is
served at one of three Ephrata Churches. Watch the
weekly bulletin for opportunities to contribute food or
to help with meals. If you have any questions, please
call Sue Watts at 738-2327
