Picture My Rights - teen photo exhibition
The Picture My Rights teen photo contest, held from 1 September
2014 to 10 October 2014 invited young aspiring photographers in
Malaysia between the ages of 13 and 17 years to submit an original
digital photo and caption that highlights one of five fundamental
children’s rights: dignity; survival, development, safety and
participation. The contest submissions were reviewed by a panel of
judges comprising Ms. Belmonte (UNICEF), Mr. Yee (The Star), Mr.
Wong (The School) and Mr. Pirozzi. The top 5 winners’ photographs
together with other shortlisted entries are on exhibit.
Workshop on Human Rights: Youth’s perspective
This one-day highly interactive workshop aims to provide a platform
for young professionals to engage in dialogue on various aspects of
human rights relevant in the Malaysian context. The aim is to raise
awareness on human rights in Malaysia, to provide a platform for
youth to express their views on human rights and to issue concrete
statements and ideas of participants through video interviews and a
publication.
Launch of the Week of Celebrations in Conjunction with Human
Rights Day 2014
Official launch of the Week of Celebrations in Conjunction with
Human Rights Day 2014, By YB Senator Datuk Paul Low, Minister in
Prime Minister’s Department. The launch of week of activities
resonates with the theme for Human Rights Day 2014; “Human
Rights 365” and encompasses the idea that every day is Human
Rights Day. It celebrates the fundamental proposition in the

Interfaith Panel, “Harmony in Diversity: A Human Rights Approach”
The Panel themed ‘Harmony in diversity, a Human Rights Based
Approach’ held as a part of the launch event will host four panellists
representing the main faiths in the country. Each panellist will offer
a perspective, through the lens of their faith, on how to secure
lasting harmony between people and communities in a religiously
and ethnically diverse country like Malaysia, and the opportunities
to address related challenges and move forward on a strong
foundation of respect for and protection of human rights.
Photo Exhibition on Migrant Workers : A Journey of Hope
The ILO GMS TRIANGLE project supports the Migration Works
campaign which aims to promote a positive image of migrants, in
line with their contributions to the economy and society.
Through the theme “Journey of Hope”, Marisha Peter, a charcoal
artist creates powerful profile images, multifaceted and multidimension story and life of a migrant worker. The imagery provides
the public an opportunity to move beyond conditioned perceptions,
reduce stereotypes and empathize with migrant workers’ working
and living among them in Malaysia; and informs the public on their
positive contributions.
Human Rights Debate 2014: Grand Final
The SUHAKAM Human Rights Debate 2014 is jointly hosted by the
Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (SUHAKAM) and Serdang
Royals Debate Club of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) to promote
greater understanding among university students via critical
discourse on the importance of human rights as well as current
issues revolving around human rights locally and globally. It is also
hoped that the debate can be the conduit to disseminate human
rights awareness among the debaters involved in the tournament as
well as viewers including university students and members of the
public. Preliminary rounds are held 6-8 December.

2014 Human Rights Day Public Forum, “Malaysia’s Role in the UN
Security Council” : Addressing Global, Regional & Domestic concerns
pertaining to security, sustainable development & human rights
Malaysia was elected as a non-permanent member of the UN
Security Council on Oct 16, 2014. This is a major achievement for
Malaysia and this global recognition enhances our global role and
contribution. The main aim of this Public Forum is understanding
the role of the security council, reviewing Malaysia’s role in the UN
Security Council noting opportunities and challenges for 2015 and
2016, in particular with regards to human rights compliance
consistent with international conventions and instruments.
Cultural Performance & Forum: “Native Title Rights – the Issues,
Claims and the Law”
Through this Cultural Performance and Forum, the Bar Council
Committee on Orang Asli Rights (COAR) aims to highlight and
increase awareness of the land issues faced by the indigenous
people of Malaysia. These issues continue to threaten the livelihood
and way of life of the Indigenous peoples whose culture, identity
and existence are inextricably linked with the forests, rivers and sea
waters forming their cultural landscape. The forum will also provide
a space for Orang Asli, non-governmental organisations and lawyers
to share their knowledge and experience on matters pertaining to
Orang Asli issues.
Speech competition for Law students
The theme of the Human Rights Speech competition is “Can Law
Safeguard Harmony in Diversity?” and is open to all law students in
public and private colleges. The competition is open to students of
all ages, but pre-registration is required. The closing date for
registration is Dec 3, 2014. Please refer to the guidelines for the
competition for details on the rules.
Death Penalty in Malaysia
This session by Bar Council and the National Human Rights Society of
Malaysia comprises of a series of talks on this important and
pressing issue. Human rights lawyers, Abdul Rashid Ismail, Edmund
Bon, and Amer Hamzah together with Amnesty International
Malaysia Campaigner, Gwen Lee Chee Yeng will draw from their
experience and expertise to discuss issues surrounding the

UN Dialogue on Environmental Rights in Malaysia
This Dialogue Session on Environmental Rights will include a
presentation on the Rights Based approach to development, Case
studies and themes relating to capacity building for legal fraternity
on environmental law and policies.
