Principal’s Message
JUNE 2014
Dear Parents:
Between now and the end of June, we will begin organizing
tentative classes for next year. Class placements and staff assignments will
not be formalized until enrolment numbers are known in September and
student placements will not be available until then.

At Lochdale, we put a great deal of thought and consideration into
organizing classes that will provide the best possible learning environments. A number of
criteria are considered such as academic ability, maturity, attitude, work habits, behaviour
and leadership qualities within each class. We also try to maintain a balance of girls and
boys and factor in social and emotional connections. With these guidelines in mind,
children are grouped into classes. As in previous years, we most likely will have combined
classes at most grade levels. Combined classes make up a majority of classes around
Burnaby. Please be assured that your child will receive the curriculum at their grade level
no matter what type of combined class they are in.
If you have specific information about your child’s academic or social-emotional
development that you would like considered, please write a letter or email directly to me
outlining your thoughts before June 6th. Class organization takes considerable time and
effort for staff, and receiving parent input late makes the process more challenging. Please
make sure to have your letter to the office by this time. Although we cannot guarantee any
specific parent request, we do want to have all available information to help us make the
best decisions for student learning.
As always, we appreciate your continued support and understanding of this
important yearly process.
Sincerely,
Dino Klarich
Helpful Tools for Families
CASEL is a national organization that does research on children, families
and development. Here are some helpful tips for better connecting with
our children on a regular basis.
1.
2.
3.
Focus on Strengths. When your child brings home a test, talk first about what he/she
did well. Then talk about improvements. Praise specific strengths. Don’t just criticize
things that were done wrong.
Follow up with consequences for misbehaviour. Sometimes parents say things in anger
that don’t curb the behavior in the long run. You might say “Because of what you did,
no television for one month.” Both you and your child know that after one or two days
the TV will go back on. Decide the consequences that are fair, and then carry them out.
Ask children how they feel. When you ask your child about his or her feelings, the
message is that feelings matter and you care.

From the Community Office…
This is it! It’s June!!!! It is very hard to believe that we have come to the last month of another school
year. Even though current mes are challenging, so many wonderful things have happened for our
students this year. This is directly because of the fantasc parent support we have here at Lochdale.
Whether it’s driving to field trips, supporng fundraising efforts, a$ending PAC meengs and volunteering at events, our parents are so helpful in so many ways. We hope those of you who were able to
a$end our Volunteer Tea last Friday felt our appreciaon. It was wonderful to see so many parents
there! A special thank you is extended to our talented students who played background music on the
piano and violin. It created such a lovely atmosphere!
The Walk-a-Thon was another example of parent volunteerism that happened in May. It was excing to
have new “first me volunteers” to supervise and direct children along the route. I don’t have the total
amount of money raised, but I believe it was just above $2000—way to go Lochdale students and
families!
Our last big school wide event for the year is Sports Day on June 13. We hope that some of you will be
available to a$end for a poron, or all, of the event—it’s always nice to connect with people on that
day!
Best wishes for the last month to both our students and our parents!
Warmly,
Stephanie Archer
