FEWS-Risk Analysis tool - Delft Software Days 2014

FEWS-Risk Analysis tool
Until today, real time flood forecasting has been traditionally deterministic. Emerging data sets
and approaches offer the opportunity to take this further to offer end users an understanding of
the probability or likely consequences of flooding. HR Wallingford and Deltares are working on a
collaborative project to develop the FEWS-Risk Analysis tool which will bring improved decision
support for disaster risk reduction.
The tool will help to answer questions such as:
• What type of action can I take to mend a weak spot in my flood defences?
• Where should I enforce my flood defence system?
• Which areas should I evacuate first?

Joint collaboration and development
Deltares and HR Wallingford will share their knowledge and
models within this study, and will also work together on the
development of the application and pilot projects.
By building the FEWS-Risk Analysis tool, we bring synergy in the
use of flood risk modelling tools for flood risk management and
flood event management. Existing tools from Deltares and HR
Wallingford will be put in an operational framework. The tool will
couple a 1D river channel, a dynamic breach growth model, a
2D inundation model and an impact model under the Delft-FEWS
shell. We will take care that the way we set up the FEWS-Risk
Analysis is flexible and re-usable. Furthermore, we will put effort
into keeping the tool computationally efficient in order to make it
suitable for operational use.
We would like to develop this tool together with end-users
in order understand the requirements of such a tool. We
would like to use your experiences and ask for your opinion
on how you might use the type of information that these
new tools can provide, so that we can develop the tools to
become of most use to end users such as yourselves.
