Global Flood Map (GFM) Information Sheet DMTI Spatial, Canada’s leading provider of Location Intelligence solutions is now offering JBA Risk Management’s Global Flood Map (GFM) for real time adjudication processes and risk management awareness. By incorporating the Global Flood Maps, DMTI Spatial now sets a new pinnacle of standards in broad-scale, reliable and consistent flood mapping. As a leading provider of flood risk solutions, Canadian insurers can rely on utilizing these flood hazard maps for the detailed assessment and prediction of flooding in Canada. Objective Indicative flood hazard risk assessment for any property Benefit ■■Where do I have significant exposures in my book of business and how bad are they? ■■Where can I write new business without growing my 1/n year flood loss? ■■Where should I not write new business? ■■Is there a flood risk indicated which may require a more detailed assessment? ■■What is the flood risk to my brick and mortor locations? What is a Global Flood Map? The Global Flood Map (GFM) provides indicative flood extents and banded flood depth information for undefended river flood hazard for multiple return periods. The GFM utilizes 1D hydraulic modelling software, RFlow. Where 2D modelling better suits the terrain, JBA has utilized its scientifically acclaimed JFlow model. JBA’s cutting edge software, along with a consistent worldwide digital surface model, ensures the highest standard of detailed global flood mapping. The underlying digital surface model is the NEXTMAP World 30 (30m resolution) data. Mapping is provided for all major catchments representing a global river network of approximately 5,300,000 km. The Banding of Flood Depths As an integral part of JBA’s Global Flood Map, raw flood depths have been grouped into 6 specificed bands. Providing full global coverage at 30m resolution and offering improved accuracy in comparison to the SRTM and ASTER data it was derived from, the data still contains vegetation and buildings which can have a significant impact on the output of the models. The DSM currently represents the best globally consistent digital elevation model available and allows JBA to produce indicative flood hazard maps that are consistent in terms of input data, modelling approach, coverage and resolution. Hydraulic Model Most of the global river network has been modelled using RFlow, which is JBA’s newly-developed 1D model that is based upon Normal Depth calculations and custom 2D flood spreading tools. RFlow has been developed to enable the rapid modelling of continental scale river flood hazard and is highly optimized for modelling areas where input data is limited. RFlow requires three (3) main inputs – elevation data, the drainage network and river flow estimates (in m3/s) at the upstream and downstream end of each watercourse section. In areas where 1D models are inappropriate, such as very flat and wide floodplains, JBA’s proven 2D model JFlow is utilized.
