Over 13,000 properties are at risk of flooding in the county of Suffolk. While the Environment Agency aims to
provide advance warning of flooding, and local authorities may provide assistance, the person who can do the
most to prepare for flooding is you. This information sheet explains your local Environment Agency flood
warning service, and gives important contact numbers, which may be useful when a flood warning is issued.

Flood warnings are issued using this set of 3 easily recognisable codes
which indicate the level of danger and give advice on how to prepare:
If you are, we provide a free
flood warning service to many
areas at risk of flooding from
main rivers and the sea.
You can choose to have our
flood warnings sent directly to
you via phone, text, email or fax
wherever you are.
We aim to give at least 2 hours
notice of flooding so that you
can take the necessary action
to protect yourself.
FLOOD ALERT: Flooding is possible. Be Prepared.
Prepare a flood kit. Be prepared to act on your flood
plan. Keep an eye on the situation.
FLOOD WARNING: Flooding is expected.
Immediate action required.
Act now to protect your family and your property and to
help others. Block doors and cover airbricks and other
ventilation holes. Water may enter your home through
toilets, sinks and washing machines, as drains become
overwhelmed. Move family, pets and valuables to a safe
place. Keep a flood kit ready. Turn off gas, electricity
and water supplies if safe to do so.
SEVERE FLOOD WARNING: Danger to life.
Stay in a safe place. Be ready should you need to
evacuate your home. Co-operate with emergency
services and call 999 if you are in immediate danger.

and radio stations during news, weather and traffic
bulletins. Useful information regarding rest centres,
