"The Ten Commandments" is a post-biblical, phrase that developed along with an image of God as police officer that is not found in today's passage from Exodus. The first phrase is the key: God is the one who brings us out of slavery; following God's law or commands is our path to freedom. The moneychangers whom Jesus drove from the temple were not explicitly breaking any of the commandments, but neither were they helping people to find God's path to freedom as they came to worship at the temple. This is an important Lenten lesson for us. We need to stop asking ourselves whether or not we are breaking specific rules or regulations and instead examine our lives to see if we are truly following a path to God's freedom through Christ. PRAYER & WORSHIP DURING LENT Stations of the Cross Fridays at 7:00 p.m. (Bilingual) in the Church Fish Fry & Lenten Soup Fridays from 5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. in Madonna Hall *Freewill offering to help cover the costs of dinner* Reconciliations here at St. Genevieve Tuesdays from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Saturdays from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Parish Penance Service on Tuesday, March 24th at 7:00 p.m. We will have several visiting priests present to hear confessions. The Elect are those in our midst who are preparing for Baptism. The adults and children of our parish who will be received into the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil are: Lisbeth Gaspar, Sayuri Geronca, Refugio Gutierrez, Jr., Miriam Ivon Juarez, Phoebe Phillips, Sebastian Peralta & Manuel Villalpando Coronado. Even if these rites are not celebrated at the liturgy we attend, or not celebrated in our parish or congregation at all, it can be wonderful to reflect upon the journey these Elect are making during Lent, as an inspiration and source of renewal for us in our journey. These are ancient rites and they may, at first, seem strange to us. But they are profoundly rooted in our human experience. We need to examine (scrutinize) how we are, the areas of our lives where we are tempted, or seriously sin - in what we do and what we fail to do. Please keep the Elect in your prayers as you continue your Lenten journey. Teaching children about boundaries and safe touches is healthy Teaching children about boundaries and safe touches is not sex education. There are many safety issues we teach children: bike safety, water safety, fire prevention, driver's training, etc. Personal safety programs should have age appropriate lessons that give children the skills they need to protect themselves without frightening them. Keeping children unaware of the dangers around them does not keep them safe. Predators count on children not knowing what to do. For more information, please visit: http://www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/child-and-youth-protection/faqs.cfm. Heaven is at present out of sight, but in due time, as snow melts and discovers what it lay upon, so will this visible creation fade away before those greater splendors which are behind it. --John Henry Newman 6 Third Sunday of Lent From the Parish Center Easter Flower Envelope Our Holy Week/Easter decor budget comes from the generous donations received through the Flower Envelope.
