It invited a variety of political as well as social turmoil, which resulted in the collapse of the Suharto autocracy. At the same time, however, it has sought to play a leading role toward the ASEAN Community since the change of a new century, and to achieve both its own national strategic interests and its region-wide perspectives toward the maintenance as well as the development of the ASEAN. Nowadays, however, facing the bilateral power game between the United States and China, Indonesia has gradually diminished its central role in the entire diminishing role of the ASEAN.
