Pineapple – Thailand
May,, 2014
May
Fruit intake and raw material price
Incoming volume of raw material during May has been
improved from previous months: 200-350 tons and 400-700
tons per day, were processed by small / medium size
factories and big size factories respectively. Raw material
from the North of Thailand has been also available at cheaper
prices, as raw material from there has to be brought from far
and has a lower yield. Raw material price declined under THB
8.0/kg from Middle of May and even went down to under THB
7.0/kg. Factories are expecting a short peak of raw material
supply until max. first week of June.

PJC Bx60 prices
Spot market prices for Pineapple Juice Concentrate (PJC)
Bx60 are moving up to USD 1,500 - 1,600 pmt FOB Thailand
for freshly produced PJC during summer crop.
PJC stocks (from winter crop onwards) are mostly frozen.
Aseptic PJC is more in demand for the markets outside
Europe. Therefore, there is an unusual spread in price for
Aseptic and Frozen pack, with the former being offered at a
100 USD pmt higher level. Even though raw material price
has recently decreased, the production from start of this year
has never been enough to cover normal demand and this
will be the situation until at least November. With supposedly
limited stocks in both Thailand and Europe FOB price may
well rise further. Some factories stopped offering, others are
offering small quantities for spot shipment only.

Weather, b/a, nitrate
Rainfall during May in both South (main pineapple growing
areas) and East areas were continuously limited and much
under the 10 years average. Temperatures during May in
both areas were higher than the previous month and also
above the 10 years average. Lack of rainfall and high
temperature will affect the pineapple plantations, both current
and next crop resulting in limited fruit supply, damaged and
smaller sized fruits and delayed forcing. Until end of summer
crop, PJC b/a ratio ranges are relatively low for the period of
the year. Nitrate levels will be decreased due to higher
temperatures and proper ripening of the fruits.

The DDU (duty unpaid) prices in Europe for PJC Bx60 as
standard blend in tank wagon or a grade A product in drums
directly from origin, is in the range of USD 1,500 – 1,600
pmt. For bottling companies it is still cheaper to buy in
Europe from stock than in origin. If stocks disappear, prices
need to be adjusted to the reality in Thailand therefore will
rise further.
