Pineapple – Thailand
January, 2014
Fruit intake and raw material price
Incoming volumes of raw material during January did not
improve. Most factories could not have enough raw materials
to process even half of their normal capacity per day. During
this period, factories are actively competing to get as much as
raw material to process because they expect the volume of
will be continuously too little.
Raw material price during January was in the range THB 6.57.0 / kg, highest record during same period in the last 5 years.
Some factories started to buy slightly above THB 7.0 / kg
during end of the month. However, factories expect further
price increases in coming 2-3 months.
Pineapple, Thailand, Raw mat price: 2011 - 2014
During January, b/a ratio’s remained relatively low at 15-18
in the South and Minimum 18 in the East, caused by low
temperatures. Nitrate levels in both areas are still mostly at
max. 25 ppm, as normal for Thailand.
PJC Bx60 prices
Spot market prices for Pineapple Juice Concentrate (PJC)
Bx60 are firming up now in the range of USD 1,250 - 1,350
pmt FOB Thailand for freshly produced PJC from the winter
crop. Old stocks, mostly frozen, are now quickly decreasing.
As the production costs have kept on rising because unusual
high raw material prices and limited supply during winter
crop, factories foresee (and need) further rising of the price.
If not, they will keep on limiting production as they have tried
to do during last few months. The shipment period for PJC
offers is kept short, at 3-5 months ahead. Buyers seem to be
more aware of the situation, therefore interest, enquiries and
deals at higher prices for PJC have increased.

Weather, b/a, nitrate
There was no significant rainfall during January in the
Southern and Eastern areas, neither during last month. This
is unusual even in the dry season and might have another
huge negative impact on the crop in coming months.
Temperatures during January in the South and East areas
have further dropped from the previous month, well under
the10 years average and lowest during last two years.
The DDU (duty unpaid) prices in Europe for PJC Bx60 as
standard blend in tank wagon or a grade A product in drums
directly from origin, remains in the range of USD 1,200 –
1,400 pmt, dependent on quality and origin of the products,
but will rise firmly as soon as old stocks for sale in
Rotterdam will disappear, probably within 2 months.

From the statistics (Jan-Dec) can be concluded that PJC
quantity shipped worldwide is the same as last year, while
price is more than 15% down. Shipments to Europe
decreased but increased to the rest of the world. With the
current supply situation in Thailand (rising prices, limited
production) we expect that shipments will be reduced further
during the first half of 2014.
