Pineapple – Thailand
June,, 2014
June
Fruit intake and raw material price
Incoming volume of raw material during June has improved
from the previous month both from local areas and further
away areas (North of Thailand). Raw material price went
down to the level of THB 6.0-6.5/kg but slightly rose again
during the last week of June because peak of raw material
supply has ended. Factories expect to shut down (for low
season) sometimes in July for 1.5-2.5 months and reopen
when the raw material supply increases again.

PJC Bx60 prices
Spot market price for Pineapple Juice Concentrate (PJC)
Bx60 is moving up to USD 1,550 - 1,700 pmt FOB Thailand
for freshly produced PJC during summer crop. PJC stocks
(mostly frozen) is reducing and freshly packed aseptic PJC
is only available in limited quantity. This situation is caused
by unusual limited quantity of incoming raw material since
early this year.
Recent improvement of raw material supply and price gives
factories some space to catch up with pending deliveries or
sell some volumes but it seems not enough to cover demand
until start of new crop production. PJC price will remain firm
during low season period until at least October. Just before
low season starts, buyers are recommended to cover their
demand for July-September deliveries as spot offers
especially for aseptic will not be available anymore soon.

Weather, b/a, nitrate
Rainfall during June in both South (main pineapple growing
areas) and East of Thailand were increased from the previous
month but lower than same period last year and also under
the 10 years average. Temperatures during June in both
areas were slightly lower than the previous month but bit
above the 10 years average. Rainfall and temperature in
coming months will be an important factor for coming crop, in
term of quality and crop size.
The PJC produced during this summer crop was not as high
in b/a as normal. Nitrate levels remained at 10-25 ppm.
The DDU (duty unpaid) prices in Europe for PJC Bx60 as
standard blend in tank wagon or a grade A product in drums
directly from origin, remain in the range of USD 1,500 –
1,600 pmt. There are still some stocks available in Europe at
lower prices due to lacklustre demand. Prices will be
adjusted to the reality in Thailand though especially since
Costa Rica is sold out until end of the year.

During January to April PJC shipments from Thailand
worldwide were at 49,976 MT appr. 20% down compared to
the same period last year. Shipments to Japan, Nigeria, UAE
and Korea were up. Shipments to most other volume buying
countries (Netherlands, USA, Australia, Iran, Spain and UK)
were down. Thai factories focus on the markets where they
can get the best prices.
