Pineapple – Thailand
February,, 2014
February
Fruit intake and raw material price
Incoming volume of raw material during February remained
limited: at some days less than 4,000 MT per day, while
average intake during season is normally 7,000-8,000 MT per
day. Factories not always run full days or sometimes skip a
production day. Raw material prices during February have
moved up even further from the previous month and were in
the range of THB 7.0-7.8 / kg, which is 40-50% higher than
the 10 year average during February. Unless there will be a
bumper crop during summer, price is expected to remain high
as factories must receive enough raw materials to produce for
their pending orders.
Pineapple, Thailand, Raw mat price: 2011 - 2014
The summer crop is approaching in coming two months and
the relative drought of last three months may impact on crop
size and quality.
PJC Bx60 prices
Spot market prices for Pineapple Juice Concentrate (PJC)
Bx60 are firm and slightly moved up to USD 1,300 - 1,350
pmt FOB Thailand for freshly produced PJC from winter
crop. PJC Stocks in Thailand are reducing as export
volumes are higher than production for some months now.
The prolongation of unusual high raw material prices and
limited supply has created the high production costs
continuously. PJC production has been further limited due to
relatively low prices in the main market (Europe). Prices for
solids are more interesting for pineapple processors, which
has led production to switch more to crushed, irregular
pieces and broken slices. PJC price will not be coming down
in coming 2-3 months but it seems not likely to increase
much either due to lackluster demand. Factories are offering
PJC prices only 3-5 months ahead, in anticipation of
possible further price increases.

Weather, b/a, nitrate
There was some rainfall during February in the Southern and
Eastern areas but this will not compensate for pineapple
plantations as last two months had no significant rainfall.
Temperatures during February in the South and East areas
have climbed up from previous months low, causing unusually
low b/a ratio ranges: 13-18 in the South of Thailand. Due to
rising temperatures b/a ratio ranges are rising. Nitrate levels
remain mostly at max. 25 ppm, as normal.
The DDU (duty unpaid) prices in Europe for PJC Bx60 as
standard blend in tank wagon or a grade A product in drums
directly from origin, remain in the range of USD 1,300 –
1,400 pmt, but will rise firmly as soon as old stocks for sale
in Rotterdam will disappear. New higher prices from origin
will start to gradually affect the spot market price in Europe.

In January PJC shipments from Thailand worldwide were at
appr. 10,000 MT at the same level as last year. Over 40%
was shipped to the Netherlands, i.e. 1,000 MT more than
last year in the same period. Most likely this is in anticipation
of an upcoming shortage and further rising prices, by traders
and blenders. Shipments to the rest of the world were 10%
less, especially to other European countries.
