International Conference
Light on Creation
Ancient Commentators in Dialogue and Debate
on the Origin of the World
Wednesday 4 — Friday 6 February 2015
Faculty of Arts, Justus Lipsiuszaal 08.16
Blijde Inkomststraat 21, 3000 Leuven (B)
The conference wishes to bring together a select number of experts on later Platonic tradition, Hellenistic Judaism, and ancient Christian biblical scholarship in order to discuss how
the topic of the origin and creation of the world was presented and reflected upon in these
various traditions. It builds on the conviction that Jewish and Christian tradition did not originate in a vacuum, but were both tributary — in a positive and a negative way (by contrast)
— to Greek philosophy, which for a long time tried to ignore these ‘newcomers’ but ultimately in turn had to position itself over against these alternative explanations.
By bringing together experts from different fields, the conference aims at crossing boundaries and at initiating a new and fruitful type of dialogue. In this way, it will contribute to
reaching a synthesis of these scholarly approaches and traditions.
