日本放射光学会設立を祝って
日本学術会議会長
近藤次郎
つくば市の高エネルギー物理学研究所にある放射光実験施設 (SOR) は，
1988年度の 1 年
間だけで 3000 時間も運転して，研究課題の中心になった研究者だけでも 300 人以上になって
いる。
この施設の利用者は単に物理学者だけでに限らず，化学者も生理学者も含まれ，このほか
工学，農学，医学にわたる広い範囲に及んでいる。このように本施設は，全国の科学者の共
同利用の大型研究施設のうちで利用効率の極めて高いものである O これは，広い波長領域の
強力な光によって，対象となる物体を観察することは，自然科学の研究には強力な手段であ
るからである O
高良和武教授よりフォトン@ファクト 1) ーの話を聞いたのは，
1977 年，著者が東京大学工
学部長の時代であった。設置場所などの関係で本郷構内では実現できなかったが，高良教授
の夢は KEK の中で現実のものとなった。
この施設の成功の結果，放射光の利用者は全国的規模で爆発的に拡大して，同様またはこ
れ以上の放射光施設を設置する機運が全国に拡がつでいる。さらに大型ノ\ドロン計画も日本
学術会議の物理学研究連絡委員会から提案されている O
ζ のような情勢に応じて，このたび放射光学を専門とする学会が誕生したことは誠に喜び
に堪えな Lì 。この学会では，性能および効率の高い放射光施設の設計@製造のための工学的
研究やその各分野での利用方法の理論的9 実証的研究のための学際的な研究と広汎な情報の
交換を行 L\
さらに新し Lì 研究，広用分野の開拓に役立つことを期待する O
基礎科学の振興が叫ばれている現在，このような先端分野の学会が結成され，その活動を
通じて日本の科学の名声を国際的にも確立されるよう心から望む次第である。

It is with special pleasure that 1 received 乞 he news about ヒ he
creation of 'The Japanese Society of Synchrotron Radiation Research'.
The systematic use of Synchrotron Radiation for applications in
science and technology is only a little more than 2S years old and 1
was always deeply impressed by the dedication and enthusiasm this
field received from my Japanese colleagues ever since , despite the
many severe obstacles in the starting phase. The early and
systematic involvement of user ヲ roups from Japanese universities and
state research insti ヒ utes on the one hand , and from industrial
companies on the other ，守 ave rise to the creation 。ま an impressive
number of Synchrotron Radiation centers in your country and assured
that Japan always played an important role in international
collaboration in this field. 1 therefore sincerely hope that the new
Society will contribute to the evolution of a field of extreme
importance for basic research as well as industrial applications. 1
a1so hope that the neW Society can be instrumental in deepening the
good spirit of international collaboration , the basis 室。 r friendship
between individuals and communities of different origins.

Japanese Society of Synchrotron Ra
diation Research" is to be set up in the
near future , and that Professor Kohra is to be its President. This is not
surprising in view of the tremendous growth in Synchrotron Radiation
activities in Japan , and 1 am sure it will be an excellent method of improving
communicationbetween people with this common interest.

he UKwe value verymuch our friendship with ourJapanese colleagues but
it is not always easy t
o interact as much as one shouldwhen on opposite sides
of the Earth.

communications , then that will be an added bonus.
Japanese scientists have made enormous contributions t
