December 21, 2014 — Fourth Sunday of Advent
4
This Week in our Parish
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
As we come to Mass this weekend, we are aware
that December 21 marks the winter solstice here in the
Northern Hemisphere. The days have reached their
shortest length. Sunrise and sunset are at their closest
point in the entire year. The sun rises far to the south and
sets far to the south. Commuters find they leave for work
in the darkness at 7:00 AM and return home in the dark at
5:00 PM. If we would travel north to the Arctic Circle and
beyond into northern Canada and Alaska, there are
places where the sun set weeks ago and won’t rise again
until February. In a few short days, however, this process
will reverse itself and the days will gradually lengthen until
the summer solstice in June.
It was at this point in the calendar, where darkness
is just beginning to give way to light, that the Catholic
Church decided to place the celebration of the Birth of
Christ. The Scriptures do not give us the exact date of
Christ’s birthday. But the Church decided centuries ago
to celebrate his birthday on December 25—when light
begins to overcome darkness. The birth of Christ brought
true light into the world, so this is an apt time for this great
celebration of the Incarnation. Certainly the celebration of
Christmas is one of the most beloved celebrations on
every continent of this world, and it is a gift from the
Catholic Church! We have no copyright or patent on
Christmas, but we can definitely express how it should be
celebrated!
So many of our celebrations of Christmas revolve
around the idea of Christ as the Light of the World. We
decorate our homes and businesses inside and out with
all kinds of lights. It is as if we announce to the world at
the darkest time of the year that Christ has come, and that
we have discovered a light that will never be extinguished.
Today, on this Fourth Sunday of Advent, we light the
fourth and final candle on our Advent wreaths. Little by
little during this Season of Advent, we have been
preparing for the coming of Christ into our hearts once
again this Christmas. For four consecutive weeks we
have lit an additional candle on the Advent Wreath. Now
we are poised for the big event itself in just a few short
days!
In our Gospel passage this Sunday from St. Luke,
we hear the beautiful story of the Annunciation. “The
angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee
called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named
Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin’s name was
Mary.” After her dialogue with the angel Gabriel, Mary
said the most wonderful words of all: “Behold, I am the
handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to
your word.” Mary’s “yes” to God brought about the great
miracle of Christmas that we will celebrate once again this
coming week. We look forward to seeing you and your
family and friends on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day
as we join in the great celebration of the birth of the Lord
Jesus! Merry Christmas!
God bless you always!

The ladies of the Immaculate Conception Altar Society
extend a huge “thank you” to all our parishioners that
helped make our Christmas Gift and Bake Sale on
December 6 –7 such a big success. It would not have
been possible without your generous donations and
attending our little holiday bazaar. Your generosity will

altar chalices. Thank you again for your generous
participation. Wishing all of you a joyous Christmas and a
happy, healthy 2015.
Most Pure Heart of Mary Schola
Cantorum CDs Available
The Schola Cantorum from Most Pure Heart of Mary
Parish in Topeka, Kansas, has been invited to the
Vatican to sing for Pope Francis for the Children’s
Festival Choir for Epiphany 2016. For the next year they
will be raising funds for their trip to Rome. Jeff Farrell, a
Most Pure Heart of Mary parishioner and Ft.
Leavenworth employee, will be selling CDs in the back of
both of our churches this weekend to support the Schola
Cantorum, of which his daughter is a member. The CDs
are of the children’s choir and would make great
Christmas gifts.
