Tests and quizzes will be done usually at the end of a topic or after certain concepts are covered. Failure to hand in assignments on time will result in 1% or 10 % mark (at the discretion of the instructor) awarded to the students for that assignment. Electronic devises are not allowed in class hence teacher’s permission. Students are not allowed to leave the classroom without teacher’s permission. COURSE POLICIES All graded assignments must be typed in black ink (normal size 12 font, Times New Roman or Arial) or neatly handwritten on loose-‐leaf paper unless otherwise indicated. Refer to the student handbook concerning academic dishonesty, plagiarism, late assignments and missed tests. An assignment is considered late if it is not submitted within the contact hour on the due date. Assignments submitted on disc or USB pens or via e-‐mail will not be accepted. Students missing a test will be required to provide a medical document or a letter from their parent providing a valid explanation for the absence. METHOD OF INSTRUCTION The approach to instruction and presentation of material will vary depending on the topic and nature of content to be taught. The major methods of instruction to be utilized will be class lectures, group assignments, lab-‐ assignments, visual aids and electronic audio-‐visual where appropriate and available. COURSE OBJECTIONS AND STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The course objective for the subject Foreign Language Dutch have been subdivided into the four main language skills and is in accordance with the European Framework of Reference A2 – B1 level. Listening skills: • • • Students understand the main points of speeches and phrases with vocabulary related to familiar matters (school, personal life, leisure). Students can catch the main point(s) of radio, TV programs and short stories or texts. Students understand various words of instruction and commands given in class. Reading skills: Students can read and understand short texts, greeting cards and personal letters. Students can find specific information in timetables, menus, events and advertisements. Speaking skills (production + interaction): • • Students can narrate a story or relate the plot and title of a book and describe their reactions and opinions. • Students can engage into short familiar conversations about family, hobbies, school and everyday life. Writing skills: • • • Students can write short personal letters describing a problem, thanking or inviting someone and share experiences or impressions. Students can write a simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest.
