Dit opleidingsonderdeel heeft tot doel om studenten inzicht te laten verwerven in hoe
identiteit (bepaald door gender, etnische afkomst, klasse en/of seksuele oriëntatie) de
politiek structureert. Hiermee verwijzen we zowel naar de actoren en instellingen
betrokken in de politieke besluitvorming als naar het proces ervan. Het vak maakt
studenten vertrouwd met de centrale concepten, theorieën, vraagstukken en discussies
inzake gender, diverse identiteiten, politiek en beleid. Er is bijzondere aandacht voor de
rol van intersectionaliteit, m.n. het gegeven dat de intersecties van verschillende
achterstellingsgronden specifieke identiteiten genereren. Het vak beoogt inzicht te
verschaffen in de wetenschapskritiek die feministisch genderonderzoek formuleert ten
aanzien van de politicologie en heeft ook aandacht voor evoluties binnen de eigen
discipline.
Inhoud
European societies today are crisscrossed with multiple identities and inequalities
which form challenges to politics and policy making. Issues of race, gender, sexualities,
religion or ethnicity are often at the root of political conflicts and shape inequalities. The
central theme of this course is how European polities, the European Union and
international and global actors handle difference and inequalities today, and
normatively, how these differences should be dealt with. The course aims to provide
students with theoretical and methodological tools for the analysis of the major
cleavages associated with discrimination and difference. It examines the development
of institutions, social movements and other key actors at the European and
international and transnational level and their impact on changing policy and
approaches. Finally students are encouraged through case studies to examine the
impact of these actors and evolutions on the societal position of people and the
mobilization of political and cultural identities in democracies.
De hedendaagse Europese samenleving omvat burgers met verschillende identiteiten
en wordt gekenmerkt door ongelijkheden. Omgaan met diversiteit en het bestrijden van
ongelijkheid en discriminatie vormt een politieke uitdaging voor beleidsmakers.

liggen vaak ten grondslag aan politieke conflicten. Het centrale thema van deze cursus
is hoe de Europese instellingen, de EU en internationale en mondiale actoren vandaag
omgaan met diversiteit en hoe ongelijkheden worden aangepakt, alsook hoe deze
instellingen dit –in normatieve zin –behoren te doen. De cursus beoogt studenten de
theoretische en methodologische tools aan te reiken die toelaten de belangrijkste
knelpunten met betrekking tot discriminatie en diversiteit te analyseren. De cursus
onderzoekt de ontwikkelingen van instellingen, sociale bewegingen en andere
sleutelactoren op het Europese, internationale, transnationale en nationale niveau en
hun impact op beleidsveranderingen en benaderingswijzen. Ten slotte worden
studenten aangemoedigd om via case studies te onderzoeken welke de impact is van
deze actoren, welke de evoluties zijn in de maatschappelijke positie van personen en
op welke wijze politieke en culturele identiteiten worden gemobiliseerd in
democratische contexten.

-Aan het eind van de cursus hebben de studenten inzicht in de centrale concepten om
diversiteit in beleidscontexten te onderzoeken. Zij kunnen de ontwikkeling van de
voornaamste instellingen en beleidsdomeinen met betrekking tot gelijkheid in België en
internationaal (EU, VN) verbinden aan nationale en transnationale sociale bewegingen.
-Studenten kunnen beleidsacties analyseren, beleidsdocumenten screenen en
actuelegebeur-tenissen onderzoeken op basis van de verworven kennis.-Studenten
kunnen fundamentele politieke concep-ten op een kritische wijze gebruiken en
herkennen de uitdagingen die diversiteit stelt voor het politieke leven en bestuur.
Knowledge: At the conclusion of the course students have familiarity with the central
concepts for examining diversity and politics. They can relate the development of major
institutions and policy dealing with equality matters in the EU and internationally to
national and transnational social movements. Skills: Students develop policy analysis
skills to screen policy documents and examine current events based on the acquired
knowledge. Attitudes: Students can engage critically with fundamental concepts in
politics and recognize the challenges that mobilized differences pose for political life
and governance.

Active participation in discussions based on reading is expected. Each student will
need to prepare the discussion on at least one of the required texts including a one
page discussion guide with at least two good questions to be turned on the day of the
discussion session and posted on the Pointcarré Forum. Active participation in the
methodology session is also required. Participation (paper, discussion and attendance)
counts for 20% of the mark. A written examination based on review questions and case
material distributed in advance requiring that course material be applied to a concrete
case accounts for 80% of the mark. Students will be expected to discuss the diversity
implications of the case and propose methodological strategies for further investigation.
