Beleidsplan Board of Studies studenten 2013-2014 Nederlands Reguliere taken De Board of Studies is een orgaan binnen de Graduate School of Social Sciences (GSSS), met als taak de onderwijsdirecteur te voorzien van advies betreffende zaken die voor de GSSS van belang zijn. Als BOS-studenten is het onze taak om het perspectief, de mening en de belangen van alle studenten van de GSSS te vertegenwoordigen. Wij proberen om vanuit deze houding bij te dragen aan de kwaliteit van het beleid van de GSSS. Een van onze vaste taken bestaat uit ongeveer een keer in de zes weken vergaderen samen met de Board of Studies. Tussentijds onderhouden wij contact met het management team van de GSSS over lopende zaken. Daarnaast zijn wij aanwezig bij de vergaderingen van de Opleidingscommissies van de studies die onder de GSSS vallen. Het doel hiervan is om in kaart te brengen wat er bij de (studenten van de) verschillende opleidingen speelt en eventuele bredere problemen te signaleren en aan te kaarten. Als BOS-studenten proberen wij dus een opleidingsoverbruggende functie te vervullen. Aankomend jaar zullen wij in het bijzonder onderzoeken of en hoe de BOS-studentleden een grotere rol kunnen vervullen bij het (verder) structureren van de werving van nieuwe studentleden voor de Opleidingscommissies. Ook zijn we deels verantwoordelijk het organiseren van een introductie voor nieuwe leden van de Opleidingscommissies aan het begin van het collegejaar. Hiernaast zullen wij aankomend jaar regelmatig vergaderen en contact onderhouden met de FSR en de studieverenigingen van de Faculteit der Maatschappij- en Gedragswetenschappen om te spreken over beleid en wat er speelt onder studenten. Internationalisering Dit jaar zullen wij vooral de nadruk leggen op internationalisering binnen de GSSS. Internationale studenten zijn er bij de GSSS in grote getale, maar er is gebleken dat er meer handvaten nodig zijn om deze studenten wegwijs te maken in het actieve (grotendeels Nederlandse) studentenleven. Om de wensen van de internationale studenten in kaart te brengen, is er vorig jaar al een BOS-student onderzoek gedaan en worden er nu International Student Panels georganiseerd door de FSR. Hier is bijvoorbeeld de wens voor een inhoudelijke faculteitbrede activiteit besproken, welke zal worden opgepakt door de SVFMG. Wij zullen deze ontwikkelingen nauwlettend volgen en waar mogelijk ondersteunen. Met het doel internationale studenten verder te betrekken in het studentenleven van de GSSS en daarbij deze studenten ook in contact te brengen met Nederlandse studenten, zullen wij zelf (1) periodiek een internationale GSSS nieuwsbrief gaan rondsturen en (2) een Engelstalige GSSS Facebook pagina oprichten. Uit een reeds georganiseerd International Student Panel en verdere gesprekken met internationale studenten is gebleken dat er aan beide initiatieven behoefte is. De GSSS nieuwsbrief zal een verzameling van Engelstalige activiteiten van GSSS studieverenigingen, internationale studentenverenigingen en UvA-brede organisaties betreffen. Het idee hierachter is dat er zo één nieuwsbrief ontstaat waarin elke activiteit potentieel interessant is voor een internationale GSSS student. Zo heeft diegene een overzicht van wat het actieve studentenleven hem/haar te bieden heeft, in plaats van meerdere Nederlandstalige nieuwsbrieven waar zo nu en dan een Engelstalige activiteit in vermeld staat. Op de Facebook pagina zullen ook relevante internationale evenementen gedeeld worden. Daarnaast is deze pagina bedoeld om zowel onder internationale als Nederlandse studenten de bereikbaarheid en zichtbaarheid van de (BOS-studenten van de) GSSS te vergroten. Studenten kunnen ons via deze pagina bereiken voor vragen, opmerkingen of klachten of hier ook met andere studenten over van gedachten wisselen. Studentencontact Wij willen proberen de BOS-student beter te positioneren als link tussen de studenten en de GSSS. Er is gebleken dat, zeker onder de internationale studenten, er behoefte is aan meer duidelijkheid over waar zij heen kunnen met klachten, vragen en/of opmerkingen. Wij zien hierin een rol voor de BOS-student weggelegd om te helpen studenten wegwijs te maken en door te verwijzen naar de juiste instanties/personen. Bovendien kan de BOS-student zo goed in de gaten houden wat er leeft onder de studentenbevolking, mochten specifiekere klachten of onduidelijkheden meerdere keren terugkomen. Met behulp van de Facebook pagina zullen wij proberen het benaderen van de BOSstudenten zo laagdrempelig mogelijk te maken, bijvoorbeeld door gebruik van een wekelijks chatmoment waarbij een student direct antwoord krijgt. Loopbaanoriëntatie Om studenten de kans te geven om zich te oriënteren op het betreden van de arbeidsmarkt, zullen wij, net als voorgaande jaren, ook dit jaar weer een Career Event opzetten. Dit evenement zal plaats vinden in de herfst van 2014. Het Career Event zal bestaan uit een middag waarop verschillende informatieve sessies over de arbeidsmarkt plaats vinden en er de mogelijkheid is om te spreken met alumni. Onderzoek Een van onze hoofdtaken betreft het in kaart brengen van de gedachten, klachten en wensen van de studentenpopulatie van de GSSS. Hiertoe willen wij begin komend collegejaar met behulp van enquêtes en focusgroepen kleine onderzoeken uitvoeren naar (1) de informatievoorziening vanuit de Admissions Office van de GSSS naar de studenten toe en (2) beschikbaarheid van gewenste keuzevakken. Van zowel Nederlandse als internationale studenten hebben bij geluiden gehoord dat er ontevredenheid bestaat over deze onderwerpen. Daarnaast zullen we met een kleinschalige enquête in kaart proberen te brengen hoe belangrijk de mogelijkheid is om in februari aan een master te beginnen bij het GSSS voor de desbetreffende studenten. Policy plan Board of Studies students 2013-2014 English Structural tasks The Board of Studies is part of the Graduate School of Social Sciences (GSSS). Its main task is to give the director of the GSSS advice about subjects which are of direct interest to the GSSS. As BOSstudents we represent the opinions, perspectives and interests of all students of the GSSS. From this position we try to add to the quality of the policy of the GSSS. One of our main tasks is to meet with the Board of Studies approximately once every six weeks. In the mean time we keep in contact with the management team of the GSSS about current business and pressing issues. Moreover we are present at the meetings of the Programme Committees of the studies that belong to the GSSS. We attend these meetings to get better insight in what is going on amongst (the students of) the different studies and to check for broader problems relevant to the GSSS. Thus, as BOS-students we attempt to connect the different studies of the GSSS on relevant subjects. This year we will pay special attention to the question if and how we can play a bigger role in (further) structuring the recruitment of new student members of the Programme Committees. We are also partly responsible for the organization of an introduction for Programme Committee members at the start of the college year. Lastly, we will arrange meetings with the Faculty Student Council and the student associations of the relevant GSSS studies to discuss policy and problems. Internationalization This year we will emphasize internationalization within the GSSS. A big part of the students studying at the GSSS are international students. We have noticed that there is need for more guidance in the active (and for a large part Dutch) student life amongst these students. In order to map the wishes of the international students, there has been a BOS-student research last year and currently the Faculty Student Council (FSR) organizes International Student Panels. This already showed that there is a wish for a substantive faculty-wide activity among international students, which the Study Association FMG (SVFMG) intends to organize. We will follow these developments with close attention and, where possible, provide support. With the goal to further involve international students in the student life at the GSSS and to bring these students in contact with Dutch students, we will (1) periodically send an international GSSS newsletter and (2) create a GSSS Facebook page in English. A previously organized International Student Panel and talks with international students showed that both initiatives address their needs. The GSSS newsletter will contain a collection of English spoken activities of GSSS study associations, international student associations and UvA-wide organizations. The idea behind this is that there will be one newsletter in which every activity is potentially interesting for an international GSSS student. In this way the student gets a good oversight of what the active student life has to offer, instead of multiple newsletters in Dutch where an English spoken activity is mentioned every now and then. A Facebook page will be created on which interesting international events will be shared. This page is also intended to make the (BOS-students of the) GSSS more approachable and visible. Students can ask us their questions, or tell us their complaints or suggestions, through this page and can also exchange ideas about these subjects with other students of the GSSS. Student contact We want to try to position the BOS-student as a link between the students and the GSSS. We have noticed that, especially among international students, there is a need for clarity on where students can go to with complaints, question and/or comments. We see a role for the BOS-student here: to help the students understand the UvA as an organization and direct them to the right instances/persons. Moreover, the BOS-student can use this information to keep track of what is going on at student level, when specific complaints or questions come back multiple times. With help of the Facebook page, we will try to make the BOS-students as accessible as possible, for example by using a weekly chat moment in which a student gets response immediately. Career orientation Just like the previous years, we will organize a Career Event to give the students of the GSSS an opportunity to orientate themselves on the job market. This event will take place in the fall of 2014. The Career Event will consist of an afternoon filled with several informative sessions about the job market and an opportunity to talk to alumni. Research One of our main tasks is mapping the thoughts, complaints and wishes of the student population of the GSSS. In order to do so more specifically, we are going to research (1) the information going out of the Admissions Office of the GSSS to the students and (2) the availability of preferred elective courses. We heard sounds of dissatisfaction about these subjects of both Dutch and international students and will research this using surveys and survey groups. Also we will employ a small survey to try to chart how important the possibility to start a master at the GSSS in February is for the students that do so.
