The accused who has been remanded to custody till January 12, 2015 was arrested after a case was registered for demanding bribe of Rs 5,500 to provide a new electric connection to his house. As per direction of SP Vigilance, Sambalpur Division Rabinarayan Patra, DSP of Vigilance Deogarh Unit office laid the trap and Dhalwas caught red handed while demanding and accepting bribe. KENDRAPARA: In a crackdown, forest personnel took into custody three persons on charges of smuggling out live mud crabs from Bhitarkanika National park waterbodies in Kendrapara district. Acting on a tip-off, wildlife protection squad of the department made a seizure of two quintals of live crabs packed in sacks from a Kolkata bound bus at Nalitapatia village near the national park boundary, forest officials said today. The arrested persons - Babuli Mallick the driver, Sanjaya Kumar Das the helper of the bus and the crab supplier Ajambila Das - were booked under the provisions of Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 and remanded to judicial custody after being arrested yesterday, they said. The mud crabs recovered from the arrested offenders were later released into the water bodies of Bhitarkanika, said DFO, Bhitarkanika Mangrove (wildlife) Division, Kedar Kumar Swain. "We had received definite information about illegal trading and catching of mud crabs. The catch was making its way to Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Kolkata and other areas," he said. PTI Ghadai demands hike in minimum wage JAJPUR: Former finance minister Prafulla Chandra Ghadai today pleaded for fixing the minimum wage to Rs 300 a day in the state from the existing Rs 164. Ghadai told PBD that many states in the country have raised the minimum wage to above Rs 200 per day. “Haryana has raised the minimum wage to Rs 236, the highest in the country. Similarly, it is Rs 222 in Andaman, Rs 212 in Kerala and Rs 200 in Punjab. However, the State government has not yet raised the minimum wage, Ghadai said. He said, in the past one year, prices of essential commodities have gone up manifold. When the wage earners have started getting Rs 250 in villages, why should they work for Rs 164 fixed by the State government? he asked. Citing the Raghuram Rajan Committee and Planning Commission reports, Ghadai said a majority of the people in State lived the below poverty line (BPL) category and they needed to be brought above the BPL by enhanced economic support. PBD BUREAU/PTI KENDRAPARA, DEC 31 AT least 22 persons have been affected by jaundice in coastal Kendrapara district, officials said today. Confirmed and unconfirmed cases of jaundice have been reported in Malliksahi village under Kansara gram panchayat on the outskirts of Kendrapara district headquarters. At least 14 cases are symptomatically confirmed as jaundice while seven others are suspected to be afflicted, said health department officials. Medical teams have been rushed to the village and have taken a stock of the situation, said Additional District Medical Officer, MA Beig. The blood samples of the affected villagers have been sent to microbiology department of SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack. The samples of drinking water drawn have been dispatched to pathology and bacteriology departments of the hospital, he said. The village has a population of 400. However, there is only one deep-dug tube well to meet with drinking water requirement of the said villagers. Contaminated drinking water led to the outbreak. Sources of drinking water are being disinfected, the health officials said.
