Electric crematorium at Sambalpur Raj Ghat PBD BUREAU SAMBALPUR, DEC 22 THE prominent cremation ground of Sambalpur city, Raj Ghat will soon get an electric crematorium and several other developmental works will also be carried out at this Ghat which is located along the River Mahanadi, informed municipality sources. Rs 1 cr has been sanctioned by the Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) for the works. The electric crematorium will be installed to resolve the problems, which occur due to scarcity of firewood and bad weather during the cremation, added sources. “The district collector Balwant Singh had convened a meeting with people from the several walks of life regarding the electric crematorium and the other developmental works of the Raj Ghat recently,” said Engineer of Sambalpur Municipality B Padhee. Suggestions from the people of the city have also been sought for the development of Raj Ghat, he added. The electric crematorium will check pollution and give people an alternate and viable option to cremate. Electric crematoriums are being used at several places now and though people will be apprehensive in the beginning, after seeing the benefits, they will certainly adopt it, said a local resident, Dev Priyadarshi. Apart from the installation of the electric crematorium, several other developmental works will also take place in the Raj Ghat and we target to complete all the works within 4 to 5 months, added Padhee stating further that construction of administrative building, firewood godown, concrete platform boundary wall and lawn will be undertaken. Moreover, the bathroom of the Raj Ghat will also be renovated, said Padhee. “Around 40 to 50 lakh will be spent on the installation of the electric crematorium. Around 28 lakh will be spent on the civil work,” added Padhee A decision has also been taken to run the Raj Ghat on Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode. “A nongovernmental organisation will be engaged to run and manage the Raj Ghat after electric crematorium is installed and all the other developmental works of the Raj Ghat are completed,” said he. "The State government has announced reduction in bus fare by two paise per km as per recommendations made by the Technical Advisory Committee of the department," said Transport and Commerce Minister Ramesh Majhi. The passengers, who used to pay 62 paise/km, will now have to pay 60 paise in ordinary buses and 63 instead of 65 in Express buses. Similarly, the fare in deluxe and deluxe A/C buses will be 83 paise and Rs 1.2 respectively instead of 85 paise and Rs 1.04 per km, Majhi said. The State government had earlier reduced the bus fare by two paise in two phases following a fall in the diesel prices by Rs 9.17 in phases in the last two months. Singh also advocated climate-smart agriculture, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, livelihood improvement and environment sustainability. Dr Singh, while speaking on climate change, informed that two noticeable effects of climate change on the environment in India are rise in temperature and shift in snowfall. He advised that mitigation, adaption and minimization should be the key objectives of a solution to climate change. Industries, School and Mass Education minister Debi Prasad Mishra inaugurated the 3-day long OEC-2014 and expressed his concerns about health hazards in various vulnerable pockets in the state as climate change and its impact is visible nowadays.
