Time to Choose Your BPA Competitions! (choices are due Friday, January 9) 2014‐15 Students can choose 2 events (only 1 can be a team event). Competitions are required for programs and optional for intro classes. INDIVIDUAL TESTED EVENTS TAKE PLACE AT NORTHWEST ON JANUARY 28‐30 DURING BELL 4  Fundamental Accounting [100] TESTED INDIVIDUAL (Written Test): Assessment of entry‐level basic accounting principles utilizing manual procedures. Students analyze, journalize, and post transactions and prepare financial reports/statements.  Payroll Accounting [125] TESTED INDIVIDUAL (Written Test): Process payroll data using manual payroll procedures. Contestants calculate earnings, complete payroll registers, update employee records, journalize payroll entries, and prepare payroll income tax forms.  Banking & Finance [145] TESTED INDIVIDUAL (Written Test): Demonstrate and apply fundamental knowledge of the banking industry. This entry‐level event tests the student‘s knowledge of bank operations, bank services, loans, credit administration, and customer service.  Keyboarding Production [200] TESTED INDIVIDUAL (Word): Evaluate entry‐level skills in keyboarding and document production.  Fundamental Word Processing Skills [205] TESTED INDIVIDUAL (Word): Evaluate fundamental skills in word processing/document production.  Advanced Word Processing Skills [210] TESTED INDIVIDUAL (Word): Evaluate advanced level skills in word processing/document production.  Basic Office Systems [220] TESTED INDIVIDUAL (Word and Written Test): Evaluate fundamental skills in office procedures, records and file management, and document production.  Advanced Office Systems [225] TESTED INDIVIDUAL (Word and Written Test): Evaluate advanced skills in office procedures, records and file management, and document production.  Fundamental Spreadsheet Applications [230] TESTED INDIVIDUAL (Excel): Create and design spreadsheet applications that include variables, reports, and formats. Students enter and format data, enter and copy formulas, and print full documents or cell contents.  Advanced Spreadsheet Applications [235] TESTED INDIVIDUAL (Excel): Develop effective solutions to business problems using many of the advanced features within the Microsoft Excel skill standards for the MOS Spreadsheet Expert Exam.  Legal Office Procedures [245] TESTED INDIVIDUAL (Word and Written Test): Evaluate knowledge of legal terminology and skills needed to prepare legal documents and function effectively in a law office.  Medical Office Procedures [250] TESTED INDIVIDUAL (Word and Written Test): Evaluate knowledge of medical terminology and skills needed to prepare medical documents and function effectively in a medical office.  Desktop Publishing [400] TESTED INDIVIDUAL (Publisher, Word): Evaluate knowledge and skills in using desktop publishing software to create a variety of business documents. INDIVIDUAL JUDGED EVENTS TAKE PLACE AT COLERAIN ON SATURDAY, JANUARY 31 BETWEEN 10AM‐2PM  Economic Research Project Individual [155] JUDGED INDIVIDUAL (Typed Research Paper; Presentation w/o Visual Aids): The student will conduct research on the topic below and present findings in a research paper, an oral presentation, and respond to questions from a panel of judges. TOPIC: The National School Lunch Program (NSLP), as promoted by First Lady Michelle Obama, has come under scrutiny because of the increase in costs to public schools. Research how this program has affected school budgets. A portion of your research should be concerned with whether the costs associated with the new guidelines exceed the benefit of healthier lunch options for students. Your research may include the following but is not limited to: (1) What has been the economic impact of the NSLP on school budgets across your state? (2) What are some benefits of the NSLP? (3) What are some concerns associated with NSLP? (4) Do the benefits outweigh the costs?  Administrative Support Research Project Individual [260] JUDGED INDIVIDUAL (Typed Research Paper; Presentation w/o Visual Aids): The student will conduct research on the topic below and present findings in a research paper, an oral presentation, and respond to questions from a panel of judges. TOPIC: Discuss the implications of working in a virtual office in today’s business environment.  Graphic Design Promotion [410] JUDGED INDIVIDUAL (Logo and Flyer designed in Publisher): Develop a theme, illustrate the theme in a logo design, then utilize the logo in a promotional flyer. TOPIC: Develop a flyer and logo promoting the Business Professionals of America National Leadership Conference in Boston, Massachusetts, May 5‐9, 2016; this event culminates the 50th Anniversary of Business Professionals of America The output of this competition may be used as part of the NLC advertising and logo for 2016.  Entrepreneurship [505] JUDGED INDIVIDUAL (Typed Business Plan; Presentation using PowerPoint): Develop an operating plan and organizational structure to initiate a small business. Competitors are to assume they are presenting their business plan to potential investors at a bank with the objective of securing financing for their business venture.  Interview Skills [515] JUDGED INDIVIDUAL (Resume, Cover Letter, Application; Interview): Assess proficiency in job search/interview situations.  Advanced Interview Skills [520] JUDGED INDIVIDUAL (Resume, Cover Letter, Application, Portfolio; Interview): Assess advanced proficiency in job search/interview situations, and portfolio development.  Extemporaneous Speech [525] JUDGED INDIVIDUAL (Oral Presentation): Demonstrate communication skills in arranging, organizing, and effectively presenting information orally without prior knowledge of the topic. TOPIC: The contestant will draw two different business topics and will select either one. The topics may deal with BPA, office situations, the business world, etc. The contestant will be provided ten minutes to develop the topic. Notes will be made on the note card provided by the event proctor. No materials or previously prepared notes will be allowed into the prep room with the contestant. The length of the speech will be 3‐5 minutes.  Human Resource Management [535] JUDGED INDIVIDUAL (Oral Presentation): Assess interpretation of personnel policies and knowledge of human resource management. TOPIC: The contestant will be given a human resource management scenario. The scenario may deal with office situations, workplace issues, legal matters, etc. The contestant will be provided 30 minutes to develop the presentation. Notes will be made on the note card provided by the event proctor. Only the Human Resources Manual, along with one note card for note taking, may be used in the preparation and presentation rooms. The contestant will speak before a panel of judges.  Prepared Speech [545] JUDGED INDIVIDUAL (Typed Speech; Oral Presentation with Visual Aids): Demonstrate communication skills in securing, arranging, organizing, and presenting information orally. TOPIC: Each contestant is to select a topic related to business, entrepreneurship, or Business Professionals of America, and develop a 5‐7 minute oral presentation.  Presentation Management Individual [555] JUDGED INDIVIDUAL (PowerPoint Presentation with Multimedia): Assess use of current desktop technologies and software to prepare and deliver an effective multimedia presentation. TOPIC: Health and wellness initiatives in the workplace are a current movement in the business world. Research and create a proposal for a business in your community to implement a health and wellness plan for their employees. Things to consider but not limited to: (1) Identify the demographics of the business and community. (2) How does health/wellness affect productivity? (3) What will your health/wellness proposal include? TEAM JUDGED EVENTS (2‐4 students in a team) TAKE PLACE AT COLERAIN ON SATURDAY, JANUARY 31 BETWEEN 10AM‐2PM  Financial Analyst Team [150] JUDGED TEAM (Presentation using PowerPoint; Handouts using Word and Excel): The team analyzes and interprets financial information from a business case study. Students use analytical and problem solving skills to make decisions and recommendations using financial reports.  Economic Research Project Team [160] JUDGED TEAM (Typed Research Paper; Presentation w/o Visual Aids): The team will conduct research on the topic below and present findings in a research paper, an oral presentation, and respond to questions from a panel of judges. TOPIC: There has been much discussion on the future of social security and the costs associated with it. There is concern that the Social Security Administration may run out of funds in the near future. Research potential problems of the social security program and its economic impact on society. Discuss possible solutions to avoid its collapse. Your research may include the following but is not limited to: (1) Where does social security currently stand? (2) Discuss the economic impact of the depletion of these funds. (3) What are possible ways to avoid insolvency?  Global Marketing Team [500] JUDGED TEAM (Typed Marketing Plan; Presentation using PowerPoint): Develop a plan that details pricing strategies and promotional plans for a business. TOPIC: Your marketing team has been tasked with developing a new professional athletic team in an emerging sport, per the request of the International Sports Authority in a selected domestic city of your choice. In order to introduce this new team, plan a competition with an already established international team in their home country. Your marketing plan should include, but is not limited to: (1) Identify the emerging sport and justification; (2) Determine domestic and international locations and justification; (3) Emphasize on international competitive event rather than entry into domestic market.  Small Business Management Team [510] JUDGED TEAM (Presentation using PowerPoint): The team will use strategic planning and problem‐solving skills to provide solutions to the business case study provided. TOPIC: Creative Kids, Inc., an event planning business specializing in theme parties for children, located in Anaheim, California, was started by Chris Kettles five years ago. The business provides everything needed for a successful event including contracting with vendors to provide theme products and food for each occasion. Once hired by a client, the client need only express his/her wishes for what they want the event to include and then Creative Kids, Inc. makes it happen. The owner has achieved financial success throughout the last five years, and is now ready to add additional event services to the business mix. Chris is unsure as to whether to add only one additional event service to the mix, or more. Options the owner has considered are expanding into wedding, corporate, or special occasion events, but is open to other ideas. Chris also realizes that with adding new event service(s) the existing company name may have to be changed and is afraid that this will affect the business’s current customer base. The owner is open to a name change, but would like it to be something the existing customer base would still recognize. The owner is also concerned with whether the local market can carry an additional event planner for the service(s) being added. Chris is seeking to add to the business’s net profit an additional $9,600 from any new service added to the company’s product mix. In preparation for the expansion, the owner has hired your consulting company to assist the business in choosing which new event service(s) to offer, the financial impact of adding new event service(s), and creating an effective marketing strategy to launch the new service(s). Your presentation should include, but is not limited to the following: (1) Justification for each new service and how fees for this service will be calculated; (2) Expenses for each new service and a timeline for implementation; (3) An analysis of competitors for each new service; (4) Projected revenue and costs for each new service in order to meet the desired profit; (5) Marketing strategies.  Presentation Management Team [560] JUDGED TEAM (PowerPoint Presentation with Multimedia): Assess use of current desktop technologies and software to prepare and deliver an effective multimedia presentation. TOPIC: Business Professionals of America’s national service project is Special Olympics. Chapters throughout the nation at all levels support this organization in a variety of ways. As a team, develop a community event focusing on Special Olympics. Create a presentation to your local business group in order to obtain sponsors for this event. Things to consider but not limited to: (1) Logistics of the event including financial components. (2) The role of sponsorship. (3) Promotional items for the event. DIGITAL MEDIA EVENTS (you must be enrolled in Digital Media Arts or Intro to Digital Media in order to select these events)  Digital Media Production [420] JUDGED INDIVIDUAL (Video, Storyboard, Presentation): Create a 1‐2 minute promotional piece for the Business Professionals of America National Leadership Conference in Boston, Massachusetts, May 5‐9, 2016; this event culminates the 50th Anniversary of Business Professionals of America. Username: [email protected] / Password: bostonevent)  Video Production Team [430] JUDGED TEAM (Video, Storyboard, Presentation): Create a 3 – 5 minute video promoting the National School Lunch Program.  Broadcast News Production Team [445] JUDGED TEAM (Video, Storyboard, Presentation): Create a three‐to‐five (3‐5) minute news broadcast, containing at least 2 different segments (news stories). Contestants will also create a 15‐20 second sound bite/intro for the broadcast. Team has the option of being the talent themselves or having other students participate in the process. Professional and non‐profit talent is not permitted. Talent refers to individuals who produce the broadcast. Therefore, only students are allowed to do any work involved in the actual production of the video. However, teams may interview professionals, experts, adults, etc. for various news segments. Professional or non‐student individuals who are being only interviewed are not considered talent. The team will develop a 3‐5 minute broadcast news production consisting of Broadcast Intro; Two (2) well‐developed news stories (the news stories may be on the local, state, national or even international level); Contestants must research actual events; Fictional news stories are not permitted; An outro music with credits. The team will also develop a 15‐20 second promo, with sound bite about the upcoming news stories.
