2nd Sunday after Christmas Day
January 4, 2015
11:00 AM
THE GATHERING
PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP
Almighty God, you raised Christ from the dead and established him as Lord over every
rebellious power. Give us grace to serve him wisely and faithfully that the world may see
his glorious inheritance among the saints and recognize the freedom of joyful obedience in
Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen.
CHIMING OF THE HOUR—CALL TO SILENCE
WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS
PRELUDE
*CALL TO WORSHIP (responsive)
Sing praise to God, who gathers us here;
from the ends of the earth we come.
With a word of promise, a spring of water, a loaf of bread, and a cup of wine,
God turns our mourning into dancing, our sorrow into joy.
*HYMN OF PRAISE
“Sing Praise to God, Who Reigns Above”
483
*CALL TO CONFESSION
*PRAYER OF CONFESSION (unison)
Holy God, you have given us everything; we have failed to respond with gratitude.
In Jesus Christ, you have given us your Word; we answer with empty promises
and lies. In Jesus Christ, you have given us your light; we try to hide ourselves
from your glory. In Jesus Christ, you have given us your life; even this precious
2
gift we have not received. Have mercy on us, O God; forgive us. In Jesus Christ,
give us the faith and power to become what you created us to be: beloved children,
full of grace and truth. Amen.
(our prayers continue in silence)
*ASSURANCE OF PARDON (responsive)
This is God’s promise, the sign and seal of your redemption:
We have been called by God, claimed in Christ, set free through the Spirit.
Believe this good news: In Jesus Christ you are forgiven.
Thanks be to God!
*RESPONSE OF PRAISE
Gloria Patri
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in
Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, 4just as he chose us in
Christ before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before him in
love. 5He destined us for adoption as his children through Jesus Christ, according
to the good pleasure of his will, 6to the praise of his glorious grace that he freely
bestowed on us in the Beloved. 7In him we have redemption through his blood, the
forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace8that he lavished
on us. With all wisdom and insight 9he has made known to us the mystery of his
will, according to his good pleasure that he set forth in Christ, 10as a plan for the
fullness of time, to gather up all things in him, things in heaven and things on
earth. 11In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined
according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his
counsel and will, 12so that we, who were the first to set our hope on Christ, might
live for the praise of his glory. 13In him ……….[we] were marked with the seal of
the promised Holy Spirit; 14this is the pledge of our inheritance toward
redemption as God’s own people, to the praise of his glory.
PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will
be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive
us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but
deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory,
forever. Amen.

At the beginning of this day, O God, you are with me, like light scattering darkness. Be with
me to the end—and to the beginning of the life that even death cannot destroy; through Jesus
Christ the Lord. Amen.
Evening:
God of all glory, I give you thanks for the fullness of this day and the grace upon grace you
have given me. Now hold me close to your heart and let me rest in the grace of Christ, the
light of the world. Amen.
