Dear Parent/Carer,
At Kirk Balk we believe that a successful partnership between home and the College is vital to the
success of each individual student. I am therefore writing to you to make you aware of two vital
events for Year 11 students, both of which will occur after the Christmas Holidays.
I am strongly advising that parents/carers attend both of these events. Attendance at one will not
compensate missing the other, as they are designed to work in conjunction to give all stakeholders
access to the information that we believe is vital in order to maximise the chances of your child reaching
their potential in all of their subjects.
Further details which are specific to each evening will be sent out closer to the time but for now it is
hoped that this letter will give parents and carers the opportunity to ‘save these dates’ in your family
calendar.
Year 11 How to Help Your Child Succeed Evening – Wednesday 7th January 2015 –
(Timings to be confirmed via your personalised appointment letter which will include the latest
performance data on your child)
This event, which occurs in the first week back after Christmas, focuses very much on ‘How to Help
Your Child Succeed’. During the evening there will be an opportunity to listen to a briefing from key
staff, including subject leaders for Maths, English and Science and indeed about how parents/carers
can support students throughout the remainder of the school year as we move towards the real
examination period. Advice about the resources that are available for use at home and information
about a range of strategies that are already in place to support students at school, will also be
discussed.
The evening will also feature some further talks with key staff and the exact details in terms of your
personalised appointment time will be sent home during the first week back after Christmas.
The timing of this evening is significant as it immediately follows the GCSE mock examinations and
teachers will be able to offer specific guidance about the ways in which parents can support students
through the real examination periods and other key work in Y11.
Year 11 Parents Evening – Tuesday 20th January 2015 – 4:30pm – 7:30pm
In addition to the above I am also informing you of the Parents Evening which also will occur in
January. The purpose of this evening is to provide parents with an opportunity to discuss their child’s
progress with individual subject teachers, following receipt of the latest important Data Collection. This
evening is critical and we sincerely hope that all students and parents/carers are able to attend and
recognise its significance. Students have an appointment sheet in their planner and I would be grateful
if parents/carers could ensure that students liaise with the relevant subject teachers to arrange
appropriate appointment times for the evening.
Schools in which teachers, parents and students work together tend to be the most successful. We
would very much like that you bring your child with you to both of these evenings. We are absolutely

committed to doing everything we can in order to strengthen our partnerships in the interests of
ensuring all of our young people achieve the best results that they can in order to go on and be
successful citizens in the next phase of their lives.
I would like to take this opportunity to remind you all that students will be completing their mock
examinations in December and it is vital that your child adequately prepares for these. These are the
grades that Further Education Providers use for selection and interview purposes and it is therefore
essential that students revise and apply their maximum effort to these examinations.
I have enclosed a copy of the examination timetable for your reference so you can help structure and
support your child’s revision. This is also available on our new website at www.kirkbalkacademy.org
Thank you once again for your continued support.
Yours sincerely,
Mr D Buckley
