Annual Report
2012/2013
Field trips:
Three field trips were organized by the SEG Student Chapter during the term:
16/05/2013: Field trip to Morsleben to learn about the salt formation present. Also the mine
is intended to be an ultimate depositional place for radioactive waste. The students were
told about the technique to deposit the waste.
Number of SEG-SC participants: 15
23/07/2013: Field trip to Nochten open pit mining for lignite. The open pit belongs to
Vattenfall AB in Nochten. The participants visited the lignite surface mine including its Boxberg
power station.
Number of SEG-SC participants: 15
05/07/2013: Field trip by Dr. Peter Ossenkopf (VEB Geological exploration). The students
learned about gold panning and did it themselves in the Berzebach River in Reichenbach
(Erzgebirge). Also Dr. Ossenkopf tought how to find possible locations for placer deposits.
Number of SEG-SC participants: 12

No activities during reporting period
5.
Participation in conferences, workshops, short courses:
05/12/2012 – 07/12/2013: 11th Freiberg Short Course in Economic Geology: Dr. Alan
R. Butcher, Automated Mineralogy & Petrography for Geometallurgy
Number of SEG-SC participants: 15
19/04/2013 – 21/04/2013: 4th international Students Geological Conference, Brno,
Czech Republic.
Number of SEG-SC participants: 9
14/09/2013 – 16/09/2013: Gold Deposits - From Theory To Exploration Practice, Faculty of
Science, Charles University Prague, Czech Republik, lecturer: Prof. David I. Groves
Number of SEG-SC participants: 8
6.
Funding-raising programs:
Funds, in the amount of 1500$ have been raised from SEG for a field trip to Greece. The

economic geology quiz with rock samples and setting up a microscope.
8.
Future activities:
Various presentations and lectures of scientific and applied issues concerning economic
geology, mineralogy, geochemistry and many more throughout the whole academic year.
Furthermore, we would like to invite the SEG international exchange lecturer or the
distinguished lecturer.
Lectures:
- M.Sc. Anja Dabrowski, Potash deposit Zielitz, January 2014
- Prof. Andrew Putnis, Mineral processes, Westfälische Wilhelms University Münster
May 2014
The SEG Student Chapter Freiberg is planning a number of field trips for 2014:
-
Field Trip to Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary
Field Trip to KGHM operated Cu mines in Poland
Field Trip to historic and abandoned mining sites around Freiberg, Gemany
Trip to “ASSE” – old salt mine, where radioactive waste was stored during the Cold
War.
Visit of Li-Sn-W-deposit Zinnwald/Erzgebirge, Germany
Field trip to Greece
Field trip to Bernburg, Salt mine, ESCO
A card game focusing on the ore minerals of the Erzgebirge region is about to be published
in early spring 2014. The card game gives an excellent opportunity of “learning through play”
of the mineral and their properties to our students. Furthermore, the aim is to promote the
ore mineralogy and geology of the Erzgebirge, geosciences in general and the regional
context.
Furthermore, collaborations with SEG Student Chapters from different universities are
focused and about to be intensified. First examples include:
-
Joint Ventured Field Trip with the SEG Studentchapter of Budapest to Germany in
spring 2014
Partnership with SEG Studentchapter of Prague, Czech Republic
Partnership with SEG Studentchapter of Brno, Czech Republic
