today’s program
Col. Mark Tillman
Piloting the President
CHAIR OF THE DAY: KARNY STEFAN
Chosen as the nation’s 12th Presidential pilot, Colonel
(ret.) Mark W. Tillman served as pilot and commander of
Air Force One from 2001-2009.
Col. Tillman was at the controls of Air Force One during
numerous prominent national events. Most notably,
he protected the President on September 11, 2001, by
keeping him out of harm’s way and connecting the
flying oval office to the nation’s first responders.
Another historic event included being the first pilot to
fly the Commander in Chief into Baghdad. The challenge
was unprecedented – safely transport the most targeted
man in the world into the heart of terrorism. One mistake would have left the President vulnerable to attack
and would have cost the lives of U.S. service members.

Col. Tillman personally orchestrated and
executed this covert operation with flawless
success. His planning, done entirely in secrecy,
allowed for a complete surprise to the world.
Col. Tillman’s distinguished career spans 30
years in the United States Air Force where he
has flown two United States Presidents, Vice
Presidents and First Ladies, as well as numerous
U.S. Senators and other distinguished diplomats.
His tenure was marked with excellence and an
adherence to a Zero Fail philosophy.

In 2004, Col. Tillman was awarded the
Distinguished Flying Cross. He was also
promoted to Brigadier General by the President
of the United States – the first military line
officer to receive this honor (not confirmed by
the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee).
A man devoted to serving his country, this
captivating storyteller will give you a first-hand
account of remarkable moments in history.

Dr. Nazakat H. Mirza, a Rotarian from India, spoke about polio eradication at our
meeting on May 9. Some of us had trouble understanding him, so here are his
comments:
Thanking you very much for giving me an opportunity to be a part of Phoenix Rotary 100 club meeting.
I joined Rotary and started free polio and DPT
immunization as a chairman 3H program in 1981.
Fortunately it took me in the direction of polio eradication.
Going down the memory lane, I remember seeing
kids at various public places suffering from post polio
paralysis. Back then, it stuck me hard to see those
kids who had a lot of inhibitions in walking around
and there I made up my mind to give my heart and
soul to work for Polio eradication.
We developed an action plan and started the
mass immunization program at Kiratpur in 1989 as
chairman Polio Plus immunization committee that
became the success story as covered in Polio Plus
reporter.
I believe good work and human service succeeds
PHXROTARY100
if you bring a good team along and the family is the
best place to start with. So I involved my family also
in this noble cause.
The journey that started 33years back with more
than 35,000 estimated polio cases per year in our
country has reached its final destination.
Believe me, I feel so contended and proud to
share with you that recently we celebrated polio free
conclave 2014.
Finally, I conclude by saying that Immunization is not a one time program but an ongoing effort,
which must be regular, steady, constant, carefully
planned and watchfully executed activity round the
year on continuous basis.
Thanking you again everyone and all the best.

REPORTED BY PP DICK POTTS • PHOTOS BY RUTH HOWE
The 5,022nd meeting of Rotary 100 was
opened by Secretary Clay Janson inviting table
ambassadors for announcements.
President Jerry Oliver
welcomed Rotarians
and guests, called the
meeting to order and
invited Randy Long
to the podium, where
Randy declared he won
the trifecta – leading the
invocation, pledge and
the patriotic song. Mo Bronson introduced
visitors and guests.
President Jerry introduced Rotarian Nazakat
Mirza from India who recalled the beginning
and long efforts in his country to eradicate polio.
Nazakat introduced his lovely daughter, who had
accompanied him to the meeting. (See his
comments on page 3.)
Dave Howell introduced outbound exchange
students Danielle Rosenberg (left below), who’s
going to Taiwan, and Cori Karr, who’s going to
Belgium.
Cori is the
granddaughter of
Rotarian Jim
Korinek.

Lori Howard, Club 100’s Youth Services Division
Chair, reminded us that we have insurance
policies for just about everything we own, and
encouraged us to take out policies on the life of
Rotary 100. Those insurance policies are the
young people involved in such programs as Rotaract, Interact, Youth Exchange and RYLA. Lori
implored all of us to become more active in one
or more of our youth programs and help insure
the future of our club and of Rotary.
PP Craig Wilson described the great need for
laptop computers for students in Kenya in the
same village that we assisted with obtaining clean
water and pled for all of us to donate our older
laptops, which will be refurbished and have
new software installed before being delivered to
Kenya.
Clay Janson delivered his Secretary’s Report and
reminded us that Club 100 would be dark next
week for the District Conference, and he encouraged us all to attend the conference. He wished
happy birthday to Jim Fishman and Melanie
McBride. Clay informed us that Ruth Howe is
the photographer for the meeting.
Visiting Rotarian Gary
Whiting explained the
Gift of Life Foundation
and recalled the late
Bob Raskin’s major
support of the project
to repair the hearts of youth from over the world
who surely would have died without their “gift of
life.” A $12,000 check was presented to Gary for
the Gift of Life project.
President Jerry
introduced the Chair
of the Day, Jason
Ebe, a partner of the
law firm Snell and
Wilmer and a 17-year
member of Club 100.
Before introducing
the latest Paul Harris
honorees,
Mark Ellis,
Clay Janson,
Dick Karpinski,
Mike King,
Randy Long,
Gene Peterson,
Dick Smith and
Dale Walters,
Jason described his
motivation for
becoming a Paul
Harris Fellow and
continuing to
support and
contribute to the
Paul Harris
Foundation. Mark
Ellis and Dick Smith
were unable to attend
and Jason shared
their prepared
comments. Those
honorees in attendance each made
eloquent remarks,
telling us why they
feel compelled to
particiate in the
Foundation by their
monetary contributions. Dale Walters
received his major
donor recognition.
President Jerry pointed out that executive director Beth Baldacchino has redesigned the newsletter with more content and photos in color.
Joe Prewitt discussed the Centennial Endowment Fund and advised us that those joining
the Founders Circle or Heritage Society before
the end of this fiscal year (June 30) will also be
awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship.
Barb Katz made a plea for new members and
discussed the new jewelry to be awarded to anyone introducing a new member.
Sgt.-at-Arms Anthony Mia invited Jason Ebe to
draw the 50/50 raffle ticket and Fred Brandt was
the lucky winner. Unfortunately, Fred’s luck ran
out and he didn’t draw the designated card, so
the pot rolls over to the next meeting. President
Jerry closed the 5,022nd meeting of Club 100
promptly on time.

Rotary International does not
endorse political candidates and
prohibits clubs from endorsing
political candidates. However,
this should not prohibit candidates from speaking at club
meetings. It is the responsibility
of Rotarians to be informed about
the issues affecting their local
community, state and nation.
Rotary clubs throughout the
world include members who have
many different religious beliefs
and values and yet are united by
their service to humanity. Each
Rotary club uses its own judgment in conducting its meetings
in a manner that reflects Rotary’s
principle of tolerance.
