Jos Anshell
The Heisman Trophy of Super Bowl Commercials
CHAIR OF THE DAY: MIKE KING
Jos Anshell was a driving force behind
Moses Anshell, a prominent marketing
agency in the Valley for many years. The
agency represented an impressive array of
national clients such as US Airways,
Nintendo, Fender, Intel, Grand Canyon
University, Arizona Office of Tourism,
AAA, DMB, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Scottsdale Convention & Visitor’s Bureau, First
Interstate/Wells Fargo, Phoenician,
St. Joe’s, Joe Boxer and many others.
Jos now has a successful marketing
consultancy called Marketing Forensics
that analyzes company positioning,
branding and marketing, and helps CEOs
Jos Anshell
and business owners maximize results &
ROI of their marketing dollars. “I loved working with Louie
Moses and with our many great clients over the years, but it
was time to kick back a little and work with a smaller group
of clients “one-on-one,” which is difficult to do in a larger
organization.”
After receiving an undergraduate degree in marketing communications from the University of Maryland, Jos attended
the Medill School at Northwestern University,
earning his master’s from one of the foremost Integrated
Marketing Communications programs in the country. Prior
to teaming with Louie Moses in 1983, Jos gained extensive
experience in marketing, management and
finance working for Unilever, Columbia
Records, Bristol Corporation and Fairmont
Foods.
Always active in civic organizations, he has
served as president and board of directors
of Phoenix Rotary 100, the executive board
and board of directors of the Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce, past chairman
and board member of the Arizona Chapter of the National Safety Council, board
member of Arizona Business Leadership,
executive board and board of Directors of
Arizona Tourism Alliance, and more.
Jos has always been extremely dedicated
to his community. “You’ve got to keep things in perspective,”
says Anshell. “Sure we’re happy if consumers bought more
of our client’s tacos or stayed in their hotel rooms, but when
someone from the Humane Society thanks us because they
didn’t have to put any animals to sleep the same week a TV
commercial we created for them ran, we know that our priorities are in the right place and that our work is really making a
difference. And ultimately, that’s what’s really important.”
Jos resides in Scottsdale with his wife, Barbara. They have
two sons, Jeremy and Adam, two grandsons, Jake and Mason,
and new granddaughter, Abigail.

Of the 10 Key Moves to Live Your
Best Life, #1 is Best:
Smile ... to Spread Happiness
“The simplest and most reliable
way to make someone smile is to smile
at him,” says Marianne LaFrance, a Yale
University psychology professor and the
author of the book Lip Service.
“Smiles are the most contagious
kind of facial expression, even among
people who don’t know each other,”
LaFrance says. That’s because seeing
a smile and showing a smile originate
from the same area of the brain.
Skeptical you can change your world
by just smiling more often? LaFrance
suggests trying this experiment: For
one day, vow not to smile at anyone. The
next day, smile at everyone. Then compare both days. Chances are the second
day will be one of the best you’ve had.

On January 31, 1940, George Coffin
called for help for his “useful hobby.”
He collected used magazines to distribute to “jails, hospitals, transient camps
and rural schools along the Alabam
truck routes. He estimates no less than
six carloads of magazines have been
distributed in this manner, and thereby
thousands of people have been given
many hours of pleasant and profitable
reading. If you have an accumulation of
old magazines ... just bundle them up
and deliver them to 425 East Jackson ...”

April Miller, filling in for Clay Janson as secretary, asked the
Table Ambassadors to review upcoming events prior to the
start of our meeting.
President Jerry Oliver wished the club a Happy Rotary Friday
and called the 30th meeting of the 100th year of Phoenix 100
to order at 12:20 p.m. Joe Posillico provided the club with
an invocation. He then called to the front three Girl Scouts
in attendance who led the club in the Pledge. Doug Bauguss
led us in song and Stan Levine gave the visitor introductions,
including PP Brendan Kennedy’s mother Shirley.
President Jerry then called on Thom Von
Hapsburg for an update of the RM auto
auction, netting the club $7,500 and a
great time for those who participated.
President Jerry then sadly announced
the passing of PP Fred Steiner at the end
of December at the age of 86.
April Miller had the privilege of presenting the Girl Scouts
a check for $10,000. She also announced that our packing of
30,800 meals last week brought our total to 787,397 meals.
That is a fantastic accomplishment and we are within sight of
our million meal goal! Further, April also happily announced
that our Sergeant-at-Arms Anthony Mia is now engaged to
Susan Dean.
Ed Phillips took the mic and had Joe Prewitt describe the
preparations for the Centennial Event at the Biltmore. Joe
promised a good time to all those who attend. Ed then introduced PP Roger Marce
who announced the
upcoming golf tournament on March 31. Barb
Katz followed PP Marce
and, with Lori Cameron,
told us about the Grape
Arizona Wine Event and
asked for volunteers.
The floor was turned over to Brooks
Hilliard who, after visiting the Sedona
Film Festival last year, was so impressed
that he invited our speaker, Patrick
Schweiss, to come to speak to Rotary
100. Patrick took to the stage and regaled the club with the background of
the Sedona Film Festival. This year is
the 20th Anniversary of the Festival and is a nine-day event
(February 22 – March 2) that screens 160 independent films.
Patrick mentioned that Susan Sarandon will be receiving a
lifetime achievement award this year. Ed Asner will be back,
as well as other stars. As promised, Patrick had some great
stories about Joan Collins, Rip Torn and Peter
Bogdanovich (which are
worth asking those who
were in attendance to retell
if you missed the meeting). Patrick also answered
questions on how he gets
from 1,100 film candidates
to 160 and how films that
are shown get picked up for
showing in theaters.
President Jerry thanked Patrick and Brooks. Anthony Mia
conducted our 50/50 raffle, which did not turn up the Ace of
Spades. However, courtesy of the Girl Scouts, we had a second
drawing for (you guessed it) Girl Scout cookies.
With that, President Jerry closed the 5,007th meeting of
Rotary 100 with the gaveling of the bell by newlyengaged
Anthony Mia.
