The Classical Music Festival is excited to offer piano performers, teachers and observers an opportunity
to work with an outstanding international piano faculty in Eisenstadt, Austria under the direction
of Jane Magrath, Grant Endowed Chair in Piano and Regents’ Professor in the School of Music at
the University of Oklahoma and in cooperation with the Haydn Conservatory.
Repertoire. The standard piano repertoire is the core of the
master classes, with emphasis on classical period composers.
Participants are invited, but not required, to bring a sonata
by Haydn. Works from the standard piano repertoire are
appropriate for the master classes and final pianists’ recital.
Recitals. Piano seminar participants enrolled as performers
will have an opportunity to perform on a recital held in the
Empiresaal at the Esterházy Palace.

potential to be a transforming experience.
The Piano Seminar is open to all pianists:
performers, teachers, college and university professors,
those preparing for public recitals, faculty recitals or
other performances.

and performed, and also by the physical presence and
historical significance of this amazing place. Please

JOIN US FOR 11 TO 13 EXHILARATING DAYS in the charming
city of Eisenstadt, the city of Joseph Haydn. The experience
will change your way of hearing, performing, and teaching
the music of the world’s greatest Classical period composers.
Who Should Attend? The Piano Seminar is designed for
performing pianists at the collegiate/conservatory levels,
piano teachers, young professionals in the field, and
college/university piano professors in the U.S. and abroad.
Participants may enroll as performers, as teachers, or
observers. We emphasize the standard literature from
a historical perspective as well as teaching aspects and
performance practice. The seminar provides the perfect
setting to prepare for an upcoming faculty recital,
competition, or performance; collaborate with experienced
faculty about the art of teaching; or hear major literature
performed. (Minimum age for pianists is 18 unless accompanied at the
Festival by an adult).
Piano Program Opportunities. Those enrolling as performers
receive two master class or studio class performances
and have the opportunity to perform in the fi nal Pianists’
Recital in the stunning Empiresaal of the Esterházy
Palace. In addition, you have access to all piano program
events. Private piano lessons available for a fee if
desired. Those enrolling as Teachers or as Observers
have access to all events, trips, and lectures, and can
receive, by request prior to the Festival, a private lesson,
if desired. Additional private lessons for Teachers and
Observers are available for a fee. The new contemporary
Haydn Conservatory in Eisenstadt will be our primary home,
with practice facilities and the concert hall available to us,
up a winding hill above the Esterházy Palace. It is here that
we will have our master classes and lecture/demonstrations.
Master Classes. Master classes will feature distinguished
Cost. The CMF Piano Seminar is reasonably priced at $1,475 (includes
housing, daily breakfasts, festival receptions and several additional meals,
and bus transportation to and from the Vienna Airport on the scheduled
arrival/departure dates. Optional tour on August 14 is an additional cost.

Airfare. Participants are responsible for their own airfare to and from
Vienna, Austria. Those arriving on Monday, August 3rd will be met by a
representative of the Classical Music Festival. Bus transportation from the
Vienna airport on that date will be provided. Group transportation back to the
airport at the end of the festival will be provided on August 16.
Registration. To register for the piano seminar, please apply online at
www.cmfadm.com no later than February 1, 2015. In the comment field,
please indicate if you are applying as a performer, teacher or observer.
Although we will accept late applicants as space is available, we cannot
fully guarantee participation after that date. Also it is possible that housing
may fill for the festival, so early registration is recommended. Maximum
enrollment of 30.
Requirements. Those applying as performers must also submit the
following materials to Jane Magrath by February 1, 2015 or before:
• 15 minute or more performance sample (YouTube link, digital link, or
mailed CD/DVD)
• Brief summary which includes educational studies, teachers, and
performance experience
• List of literature studied
• A letter of recommendation from current teacher (under 22 applicants
only)

Nicholas Roth of Drake University, and Jane Magrath,
University of Oklahoma. Performers may perform in two
master classes and/or studio classes and will be assigned to
classes prior to the Festival. Performers, please bring at least
two works memorized and at a high level to perform in the
master classes or recital.
Piano Seminar Faculty Artists
Jane Magrath is internationally known as an author, clinician, and pianist.
Her book The Pianist’s Guide to Standard Teaching and Performance
Literature has become a classic reference work for pianists throughout the
world. She currently has more than fifty literature volumes published with Alfred
Publishing, and her music editions are used widely throughout the USA and
abroad. Currently, Magrath is Regents’ Professor and Director of Piano Pedagogy
at the University of Oklahoma where she holds the Grant Endowed Chair in Piano
Pedagogy and was previously named McCasland Presidential Professor and
Rothbaum Professor. A number of her former students are in faculty positions in
colleges/universities in the United States.
Alan Chow, acclaimed for his “elegant poetry and virtuosic fire,” has won
major competitions including First Prize at the Concert Artists Guild International
Competition and the Palm Beach International Piano Competitions, prizewinner
in the William Kapell International Piano Competition, and Silver Medalist and
Audience Favorite at the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition. A
Steinway artist, Chow has performed in recital and in concert with orchestras
from coast to coast in major music centers in over forty states. He regularly tours
Asia with performances in China, Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan and Singapore.
Chow currently is on the piano faculty at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL.
Nicholas Roth is a Yamaha Artist and Beethoven Fellow of the American
Pianists Association. He has taught master classes at Indiana University,
Isidor Baji School of Music (Serbia), International Beethoven Festival
(Chicago), SoundSCAPE Festival (Italy), and many universities throughout
the USA. Roth earned degrees from Indiana University, Michigan State
University, and the Hochschule für Musik in Munich as a DAAD Scholar.
He studied with Edward Auer, Michel Block, Helmut Deutsch, Emilio del
Rosario, Elisso Virsaladze and Ralph Votapek. His solo and collaborative
recordings are available on Blue Griffin, Innova, MSR Classics, NAXOS, and
Proximal Records. Roth is Associate Professor of Piano at Drake University.
Barbara Fast , Bambas Professor and Piano Area Chair, teaches piano
pedagogy and coordinates the group piano program at the University of
Oklahoma. She cofounded the National Group Piano/Piano Pedagogy Forum
and serves as President of the Oklahoma Music Teachers Association. Fast
has presented workshops on practicing, sight reading, ensemble music,
and historical keyboard pedagogy at Music Teachers National Conferences,
International and National College Music Society Conferences, the National
Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy, and others. She has performed in chamber
settings in England, Russia, and Japan.
Judy Stafslien, is a Coach/Accompanist at Viterbo University in
LaCrosse, Wisconsin, where she received her degrees in piano performance
and music education. She is also music director of the LaCrosse BoyChoir.
Well known as a collaborative artist in the upper Midwest, she has accompanied
soloists and choral groups throughout the U.S. and Europe and has served as a
professional accompanist for the National Association of Teachers of Singing, the
Metropolitan Opera District and Regional Auditions, among others.
Lecture/demonstrations will be offered by piano faculty Jane
Magrath on teaching and performing Haydn piano sonatas;
Barbara Fast on “Haydn’s Vienna: The rise of duet playing
related to pianos, concerts, and the culture,” and “Practicing:
What the Experts Say;” Edward Rath on “Liszt”; David
Heller, Trinity University, on “Articulation in early keyboard
music”; Walter Burian, Director of the Haydn Conservatory
on “The Esterházy Family”; Walter Reicher, Intendant of the
Haydn Festival on “Joseph Haydn”; Don V Moses, festival
founder, on “Ten Points of Classical Music.”

In the heart of Vienna, you’ll see the
biggest and highest of all Viennese
churches, St. Stephen’s Cathedral.
Optional Private Lessons. Participants enrolling as Teachers
or Observers may have one 45-minute private lesson during
the festival with one of the piano seminar faculty artists,
included in the festival fee. Performers may elect a 45-minute
private lesson for an additional fee of $45. Private lesson
requests from Teachers and Observers should be reserved
with Jane Magrath by June 1.
