REPORT OF THE COMMISSION ON PREPARATION FOR MINISTRY
To Pittsburgh Presbytery
September 17, 2014
The commission met at 4:00 PM on September 17, 2014, in the Patrick Room of the Pittsburgh Presbytery Center. A
quorum was present.
Part I: Items for Information
1. Session Visits
The commission reports a visit to First United Presbyterian Church, Tarentum,
conducted in order to discuss the role of the Session in the preparation for
ministry, to remind teaching and ruling elders of the need for such a visit before
consideration of endorsement if one has not been made within the last three
years.
NOTE: If a person is considering ordination as teaching elder, it is important the
person or the person’s pastor seek current information from the chairperson of the
Commission on Preparation or with the presbytery BEFORE being recommended
by their Session.
2. Pre-Care Consultations
The commission reports Pre-Care Consultations were conducted with the
following applicant:
a. Bailey, Troy
b. Bentley, Laura
3. Annual Consultations
The commission reports annual consultations were reviewed and the following
Inquirers (I) / Candidates (C) approved to continue under the care of Pittsburgh
Presbytery:
a. Birt, Ashley (C)
b. DePoe, Rebecca (I)
c. Neba-Mbandi, Martha (R)
4. Enrollment of Inquirers
The commission reports the following persons were approved to be enrolled as
Inquirers:
Bailey, Troy Troy Bailey, a member of Bower Hill Community Presbyterian Church since 2012,
graduated from Vassar College in 2006 and Chatham University in 2010 and is
currently enrolled at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (distance program) and
Pittsburgh Theological Seminary.
Bentley, Laura Laura Bentley, a member of The Open Door since 2010, graduated from the
University of Pittsburgh in 2010 and expects to graduate from Pittsburgh
Theological Seminary in 2016.
5. Examination to be Received as
Candidates
The commission reports the following Inquirer was approved to be received as a
Candidate:
Lathom, Annie Annie Lathom, a member of Cross Roads Presbyterian Church, Gibsonia, since
1986, graduated from Grove City College in 2009 and from Pittsburgh Theological
Seminary in 2013. Annie became Enrolled as an Inquirer in October 2011.
6. Ordination Examinations
The commission reports the following persons has been given permission to take
the Bible Content Examination:

b. Carlin, Michael
c. DePoe, Rebecca
d. Quel, David
e. Schneider, Benjamin
The commission reports the following person has been given permission to take
the four Standard Ordination Examinations:
a. Carlin, Michael
The commission reports the following person has been given permission to retake the examination(s) specified:
a. Treese, Del (Bible Content)
7. Removal from Process
The commission reports removal of the following Inquirers/Candidate from under
the care of Pittsburgh Presbytery:
a. Bindewald, David
b. D’Ippolito, Richard
c. White, Alex
8. Grant Disbursements
The commission reports the income from the Saul Trust Fund will be distributed
by the Financial Aid Office Of Pittsburgh Theological Seminary in the amount
indicated to the following students who are under care of Pittsburgh Presbytery:
a. DePoe, Rebecca ($8,016.50)
b. Walton, Gavin ($8,016.50)
9. Appointment of Commission
for Ordination
The commission reports the following commissions appointed to ordain the stated
Candidates, with full authority to arrange and conduct the service subject to the
requirements of the constitution of the Presbyterian Church (USA). The
moderator or his/her appointee, shall be moderator of the commission and the first
named minister after the moderator shall be the clerk:
Bird, Sarah If the way be clear, Sarah Bird will serve as Associate Pastor at Sewickley
Presbyterian Church. Her service of Ordination/Installation is scheduled for 4:00
PM on Sunday, October 19, at Sewickley Presbyterian Church with the following
commissioners: The Moderator or her designee, Rev. Kevin Long, Rev. Russ
Mowry, Elder Susan Wardrop (Sewickley Presbyterian Church), and Elder Stuart
Hutchison, III (East Liberty Presbyterian Church).
Frayer-Griggs, Jennifer If the way be clear, Jennifer Frayer-Griggs will serve as Temporary Part-Time
Pastor at Greenfield Presbyterian Church. Her service of Ordination is scheduled
for 4:00 PM on Saturday, October 4, at Sixth Presbyterian Church with the
following commissioners: The Moderator or her designee, Rev. Susan
Rothenberg, Rev. Jeff Eddings, Elder Millie Barnes (Sixth Presbyterian Church),
and Elder Dylan Rooke (Hot Metal Bridge Faith Community).
Howe, Charissa If the way be clear, Charissa Howe will serve as Temporary Part-Time Pastor at
Liberty Presbyterian Church. Her Service of Ordination is scheduled for 4:00 PM
on Sunday, September 28, at Bellevue United Presbyterian Church with the
following commissioners: The Moderator or her designee, Rev. Catherine Purves,
Rev. Saleem Ghubril, Elder Kate Shimko (Mosaic Presbyterian Church), and
Elder Carla Schubert (Liberty Presbyterian Church).
Scott, Lee If the way be clear, Lee Scott will serve as Director of Staff Services at Coalition
for Christian Outreach. His Service of Ordination is scheduled for 2:00 PM on
Sunday, October 26, at The Open Door Presbyterian Church with the following
commissioners: The Moderator or her designees, Rev. Tom Moore, Rev. BJ
Woodworth, Elder Marlaena Cochran (The Open Door Presbyterian Church), and
Elder Jill Campbell (Southminster Presbyterian Church).
Part II: Items for Action
1. Oral Parts of Trial
The commission recommends the following Candidates stand for his/her oral
parts of trail (Statement of Faith included in packet materials):
Bird, Sarah If the way be clear, Sarah Bird, Certified Ready by the Abingdon Presbytery in
Wytheville, VA, will be ordained and installed as Associate Pastor at Sewickley
Presbyterian Church.
Frayer-Griggs, Jennifer Jennifer Frayer-Griggs, a member of Sixth Presbyterian Church since 1979,
graduated from McNeese State University in 2005 and from Pittsburgh
Theological Seminary in 2013. Jennifer became Enrolled as an Inquirer in August
2010 and Received as a Candidate in June 2012. If the way be clear, Jennifer will
be ordained as Temporary Part-Time Pastor at Greenfield Presbyterian Church.
Howe, Charissa Charissa Howe, a member of Mosaic Community Church since 1979, graduated
from Geneva College in 2011 and from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary in 2014.
Charissa became Enrolled as an Inquirer in May 2011 and Received as a
Candidate in June 2012. If the way be clear, Charissa will be ordained as PartTime Temporary Pastor at Liberty Presbyterian Church.
Scott, Lee If the way be clear, Lee Scott, Certified Ready by the Beaver-Butler Presbytery,
will be ordained as Director of Staff Services at Coalition for Christian Outreach.
