MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF APRIL 16, 2014 of the WORLD OUTREACH COMMITTEE of the EPC PRESBYTERY OF THE WEST IN ATTENDANCE: Cecil Matthews, chair, Mike Anderson, Al Johnson, Don Kearby, Sarah Holmes, and Scott Urquhart; present via remote connections: MaryHobson Hennagin, Bob Kuseski, Jim Murphy and David Van Valkenburg; guests: Brian and Keri Christensen 1. Welcome, Introductions, and review minutes of March meeting. 2. Devotion: Cecil opened with a discussion about prayer. 3. Meet Brian and Keri Christensen from Christ Fellowship Church, Fort Collins, Colorado. Brian and Keri, and their daughter Molly, are going for at least two years as global workers for the EPC. Christ Fellowship Church (CFC) in Fort Collins, CO is their sending church. The WOC in Livonia, Michigan requires the session of CFC to present Brian and Keri at Presbytery for approval. They shared their calling at our meeting today and receive our approval. The WOC will then present them to the Presbytery at the May 2-3 meeting at Parker EPC in Parker, CO. 4. Presbytery short term mission trip sponsored idea. Don Kearby reported on work he and Sherly Smith have begun. It is clear that a “lead person” is essential for trips sponsored by the presbytery. Don will commit his and Sheryl’s ideas to writing. They hope to have a solid plan to present a workshop to the presbytery meeting by the Feb, 2015 meeting. There are several sorts of short term mission trips: ! Trips such as to South Sumatra to perhaps join ongoing work, ! Work trips sponsored by the presbytery - a lead person is essential for such trips. 5. Video-Slide show idea about short term mission trips to share at Presbytery meetings and on line. Workshop idea at Presbytery for Mission leaders. Don reported on such a workshop recently conducted at the Presbytery of the Pacific. That conference was simultaneous with a presbytery meeting. 6. Presbytery website update by Scott Urquhart and Cecil. (A new website is being developed by the Presbytery under the direction of Lisa Hawker from The Neighborhood Church, Lakewood, CO. www.brainsandbox.me) This is the mock up website for now. This development work is very much in transition without any current written material available for the development of materials for the WOC part of the web site. David Van Valkenburg pointed out that Phil Van Valkenburg has worked on related matters at the denominational level. Perhaps he could be used as a resource person for our development work. 7. Concern about sensitive material shared on the website: We will be more diligent about this in the future. On a related matter, Sarah Holmes is writing up how to share names of West EPC missionaries with churches so that we don't become insensitive with where they are and what they are doing. We will share this writing with George Carey at EPC office in Livonia, Michigan for approval. 8. Continued discussion about the name of World Outreach Committee. Conclusion: Let’s ignore this matter for now. Interest seems to have died down. 9. GOTOMeeting status: Not to be available to us any more. We will have to use telephone communications in the future. Comments from phone participants reminded us of the need for more discipline of those in the meeting to make sure they are heard. The possibility of auxiliary microphones was suggested, and will be check on. 10. Closed with prayer by Don Kearby.
