T
he U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has said that
about 310,000 children in the United States between the ages of
1 to 5 have high levels of the lead toxin in their blood. Many toys
made in China have been recalled due to the lead paint on the toys.
Why all the fuss about lead poisoning? The Salt Lake County Official
Website, www.slco.org, shares the following information. Lead causes health
behavior, and learning problems for young children especially under 6 years
of age and results in severe permanent injury from continued exposure.
Lead also harms unborn babies and causes difficulties for pregnant mothers.
Lead is found in interior or exterior painted surfaces that are chipping,
cracking, or peeling, and friction surfaces like windows and doors dust, bare
soil, varnish, water, and plastic mini-blinds. Homes built before 1978 may
contain lead based paint.
If you are concerned about lead in your home, free grant money is available
through the Salt Lake County Lead Safe Housing Program for those fitting
the following criteria:
• If your home was built before 1978.
• If you have a child under the age of 6 living in or visiting your home.
• If your home has chipped or peeling paint.
• If your income is at or below the median income.

Potty Training Workshop
D
T
DI VANTAGE has
regularly scheduled Potty
Training Workshops at
each site throughout the year. The
Potty Training Workshops provide
valuable information to help get you
and your child through this important process.
The goal of the Community Food Co-op is to:
• Reduce hunger in Utah by providing a consistent way for people
(particularly the working poor and those on limited fixed incomes) to
stretch their grocery budgets while being able to afford quality, healthy food.
• Build community by bringing people of all backgrounds together to
collectively save money, consume more conscientiously, and break down
barriers that keep us apart.
Here are some signs your child is
not ready for potty training:
• Lacks awareness that he/she is
urinating or having a bowel movement in his/her diaper.
• Shows no particular pattern to
bowel movements.
• Urinates more than once every two
hours.
• Shows overt resistance to your
references to potty training.
• Shows no interest in using the
toilet.
• Has a generally negative attitude
toward toileting.
• Is experiencing stress or turmoil,
such as sleeping problems, a new
baby in the home, a new caregiver
or parental conflict.
he Community Food Co-op of Utah is a volunteer powered, noprofit food-purchasing cooperative bringing communities together
and providing Utahns with high quality, fresh food at substantial
savings. The Community Food Co-op is for everyone. Whether you are
struggling to meet your basic food needs or are just looking for a way to
share in the community, you can be part of this simple exchange: giving and
receiving.
The Community Co-op works hard to bring you local food whenever
possible. This way, they are able to ensure that you get the freshest food
possible plus helping the community by supporting local food companies.
All shares are sold below operating cost to provide a long-term avenue
for addressing hunger concerns in our community. The samplers and ala
carte items from the neighborhood delivery program provide the funding
necessary to continue offering healthy food for low income families. Any
excess food or gently bruised produce is donated to Crossroads Urban
Center for their Emergency Food Pantry.
If you are able-bodied, participants are asked to give a couple of volunteer
hours once every three to four months. The program thrives on volunteer
work and the more hours of volunteering they receive, the better the prices
are. Their 20/20 program gives you a certificate for 20% off all food at the
twice-weekly Market Sales for every 20 hours of volunteer time you give.
The Community Food Co-op is open to all people willing to work together
to make our community a better place for everyone regardless of gender,
class, race or ethnicity, politics, or religion. Anyone can benefit, regardless
of income. If you eat, you qualify. The more people participate, the greater
the savings become for everyone, because it allows the co-op to buy larger
quantities at lower prices.
For more information about The Community Food Co-op and how you can
participate, visit foodco-op.net or call (801) 850-9457.
Even if your child is not ready for
potty training, you can still attend
the Potty Training Workshop. In
fact, attending the class before your
child is ready will help you recognize
the signs of readiness.
You can find dates and times for the
Potty Training Workshops in your
Learning Link brochure and on our
web site. If you did not receive a
brochure or are unable to attend any
of the scheduled classes, please talk
to your provider.
