Their purpose is to shore up family life and to clarify how the Church can continue to be involved in supporting the family. They will publish preliminary work but will continue the study the next two years. We can all agree that the family unit is under attack and the children are the ones who suffer the most. Research indicates that the two-biological parent unit still enjoys the best outcome, on average (“Marriage and children well-being: research and Policy Perspectives” study, 2010.) Children living with their mother and her boyfriend are about 11 times more likely to be sexually, physically or emotionally abused than children living with their married biological parents. Children living with their cohabiting parents are more than four times more likely to be sexually, physically or emotionally abused than their peers living in a home headed by their married parents. (“Suffer the Little Children; Cohabitation and the Abuse of America’s Children,” from PublicDiscourse.com, 2011) We adults are critical in shaping the wellbeing of our children. This is the reason we continue to support Catholic schools and parish education for our children. I want to compliment all of you for your financial, emotional, prayerful support of our children at St. Wendelin. You do make a difference. Our teachers also need to be complimented. They are the ones who work with the children and strive to give them balance as they grow into adults. This too is part of building the Body of Christ and God’s Kingdom in our own times. Pray also for insights to be gained from the meetings on the family in Rome. The challenge is universal and transcends our borders. Fr. Shellie Gabel The Liturgy of the Eucharist: The Eucharistic Prayer ~Anthony Gallina The Eucharistic Prayer is the highest point of the celebration of Mass. The Eucharistic Prayer is rightfully called “The Great Prayer of the Church” because it is through this prayer that the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ. Without the Eucharistic Prayer, Mass cannot be celebrated, the sacrifice on the altar cannot be offered, and the Catholic faith has no standing. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal, no. 78 says: “The Priest calls upon the people to lift up their hearts towards the Lord in prayer and thanksgiving; he associates the people with himself in the Prayer that he addresses in the name of the entire community to God the Father through Jesus Christ in the Holy Spirit.” Prior to the Second Vatican Council, there was just one Eucharistic Prayer – The Roman Canon. This Eucharistic Prayer saw its conception in the very early Church, as early as the second century. By the end of the sixth century during the papacy of Pope St. Gregory I (590-604), the Roman Canon as we know it today was set and the prayer has remained virtually unchanged. There have been small changes, such as removing mention of a civil ruler (Pope St. Pius V in 1570) and adding Saint Joseph’s name (Pope St. John XXIII in 1962). The Second Vatican Council approved nine other Eucharistic Prayers which can be used for different celebrations. The four main Eucharistic Prayers are The Roman Canon (EP I – generally used on major feasts), EP II (generally used on weekdays), EP III (generally used on Sundays), and EP IV (generally used to better signify salvation history). There are two Eucharistic Prayers for Reconciliation which can be used in any Mass in which the mystery of reconciliation is to be conveyed. They are primarily used during the Season of Lent. Finally, there are four Eucharistic Prayers for use in Masses for Various Needs. These Eucharistic Prayers can be used during any of the Masses for Various Needs such as: For the Church, For the Pope, For Promoting Harmony, For a Spiritual or Pastoral Gathering, In Time of War or Civil Disturbance, and so on. In each Eucharistic Prayer, there are eight specific elements that form the whole prayer. These elements are distinguishable from each other in this way: thanksgiving, acclamation, epiclesis, Institution narrative and Consecration, anamnesis, oblation, intercessions, and concluding doxology. We will explore each of these elements more closely over the next few weeks. St. Wendelin Rosary Altar Society Our meeting is October 22, 2014, at 7pm in the Parish Hall. The guest speakers are Casey Kerr and Kathy Lowe of the Cooperative for Education (Guatemala). Hostesses for the evening are Norma Fox and Rosie Fritz. We are looking forward to see new faces attend our meeting. Catholic Communications Campaign Next week our parish will have collection envelopes in the pews for the Catholic Communication Campaign (CCC). This collection communicates the Gospel through Catholic social media activities and enriches our faith through Internet, television, radio, and print media. Half of all proceeds remain in our diocese and support local needs, so please be generous in this collection. CCC equips us to share our experiences of faith, worship and witness with the world. “New Life Journey”: Help for the Divorced & Separated “New Life Journey”, a DivorceCare, Inc. program of healing and recovery for divorced/separated persons, began its 14-week series on Sunday, Sept. 7th, and runs through Sunday, Dec. 7th.
