Southland Church Core Values Part Four – Jesus as Functional Lord Prayer Sheet Oct 9-10, 2010 We know that one day Jesus will rule and reign but is He actively reigning and ruling NOW, or is He just a figure head monarch until He assumes His future reign? Acts 20:28 says Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood (ESV). Jesus owns the Church! Jesus (not us) is Lord of the church! Matthew 16:18 … I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it (ESV) Personal Reflection: Because Jesus owns the Church and is the functional Lord of the Church, He must also own you and be functional Lord of your life too. Spend some time thinking about your relationship with God – can you honestly say that He is the functional Lord of your life? Are there areas of your life where you find it easy to give him ownership and areas where you find it harder? What are those areas? Does it scare you to give up ownership and control of your life and hand it over to Jesus? Why? __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ Jeremiah 10:21 The shepherds of my people have lost their senses. They no longer seek wisdom from the LORD. Therefore, they fail completely, and their flocks are scattered. (NLT) There are many pastors, church boards, church staff, Bible College and seminary professors and presidents, leaders and boards of Christian organizations, Christian marketplace leaders, and moms and dads who have lost their senses! They do not make Him functional Lord of their lives – they simply do what is right in their own eyes! They do not OBEY Him! Luke 6:46 Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? (ESV) Through Listening Prayer ask God to reveal to you any places in your life where you have struggled making Jesus Lord. For each area, ask Him to show you where you are settling for your own wisdom instead of seeking His wisdom. He said, “Whoever loses his life for my sake will (actually) find it! Matt 10:39 (ESV). Then He goes on to illustrate this in Matthew 13:45-46 “the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, 46 who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it”. (ESV) Is anyone feeling sorry for the guy who sells all he has (which isn’t much compared to the price of the pearl), in order to get the pearl?! NO!!! Many people are trying to find life – looking for a fix of life by looking to sexual sin, or by fleeing from their marriages, or by accumulating all the money or things that they can or working their way up the corporate ladder. But these things only give you a quick fix – and then they are gone! Hebrews 11:24-26 (ESV) By faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, 25 choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. 26 He considered the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking to the reward. If you submit to the Lordship of Jesus, it will cost you something – maybe something very dear to you – but then you get a pearl of great value. You get to really experience life & blessings (the one who loses it finds it!). You get joy unspeakable and full of glory. You get meaning and purpose in life. You get to hear God all the time – because He confides His secrets with those who fear/submit to His Lordship (Psalm 25:14). You get to experience real miracles in your life. You get to see your faith flow down into your children & grandchildren. You get to experience heavenly relationships in marriage, family, friends & church. And that doesn’t even touch on the eternal rewards yet! Costly? YES! But worth everything you could spend to get it! Truly the pearl of great value! Listening Prayer: Go back to your list of things from page one, ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you what the reward will be for submitting these areas to the Lordship of Jesus. Ask Him to show you what you will really get to experience as you count the cost, deny yourself and follow Him. Praise Him for His Lordship which is good and right, just and true! Thank Him for teaching you about this and not letting you spend one more day living your life as if it’s your own. __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________
