C It is my meditation all day long. P Your Commandments make me wiser than my enemies. C For they are always with me. P I have had more insight than all my teachers. C For Your Testimonies are my meditation. P I have been behaving more intelligently than the old men, C because I have been keeping Your Directions. P I have kept my feet back from every evil path. C in order that I may keep Your Word. P I have not turned away from Your Decisions. C For You Yourself have taught me. P How delicious are Your Words to my taste, C sweeter than honey to my mouth! P Because of Your Directions I behave perceptively. All Therefore I hate every false path. Collect: Almighty God, you have poured into our hearts the true Light of Your incarnate Word. Grant that this Light may shine forth in our lives; through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who live sand reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen. 1 Old Testament: 1 Kings 3:4-14 Epistle: Ephesians 3:1-12 Gospel: Luke 2:41-52 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all. Amen. The text for the sermon is the Gospel heard before from Luke 2:41-50. 41 Every year Jesus’ parents used to go to Jerusalem for the feast of the Passover. 42 When He was twelve years old, they went up to the Feast, according to the custom. 43 When they had spent the days there, and while they were returning, the Boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His parents were unaware of this. 44 They thought He was with the others who were travelling with them. After travelling for a day, they began to look for Him among their relatives and acquaintances. 45 When they did not find Him, they went back to Jerusalem, looking for Him. 46 After three days they found Him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions. 47 All those who heard Him were astonished at His understanding and answers. 48 When His parents saw Him, they were astonished. His mother asked Him, “Son, why have You done this to us? Look! Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you.” 49 He asked them, “Why have you been looking for Me? Did you not know that I had to be about My Father’s business?” 50 However, they did not understand what He said to them. 51 Then He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and He was obedient to them. His mother kept all these things in her heart. 52 Jesus grew wiser and taller and increased in the approval of God and of people. Lord God, Heavenly Father, sanctify us through Your Truth, Your Word is truth. Amen. 2 ANANTIDOTE TO DESPAIR Despair. A hard word for a hard emotion and feeling. You feel it from time to time. You feel despair when you reflect on opportunities that came your way but that you ignored. You feel it when you reflect on poor choices you have made in life. You feel it when you are tempted to be dissatisfied with what God has provided for you. You look across the fence to where the grass seems greener and wonder why you don't have this or that. Despair holds you most closely when you compare your life to the perfect, pure, holy will of God, as it is summarized most powerfully in the Ten Commandments. Your sin rises up before your eyes, and you recognize, with the apostle, "Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?" (Romans 7:24). Despair is such a harsh and cruel taskmaster when it enters into your life and penetrates to your very soul. Precisely in these moments and times, you hear God's Word sounding forth powerfully: "Thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labour is not in vain" (1 Corinthians 15:57-58). Nothing will ever separate you from the love of God that is yours in Christ Jesus. Nothing. Not your fear. Not your despair. Not your sin. Look to Christ. Cling to Him. Say to Him, "I am Yours; save me" (Psalm 119:94). Jesus says to you, "Stay close to Me, I am your rock and castle. Your ransom I Myself will be; For you I strive and wrestle. For I am yours, and you are Mine, And where I am you may remain; The foe shall not divide us" (LSB 556:7).
