To life! nothing gets done. “What is Chanukah?” Chanukah literally means “dedication.” The Maccabees rededicated the Temple, which the Syrian-Greeks had turned into a pagan shrine, to the service of God. We do not, thankfully, have to worry about Antiochus and the SyrianGreeks anymore, but the question of “dedication” still matters. What does it mean to us to be dedicated? To what are we dedicated? How do we express that? How are we dedicated to our Jewishness and to the Jewish people? Chanukah is the perfect time to ask and discuss those questions with our family and friends. I write this on the very day of the heinous terrorist attack in Jerusalem that killed five innocent people. We are still beset by enemies, even as we rejoice in the miracle that is the modern state of Israel. Israel, and Rabbi Laurence W. We look at the year that passed, reflect on the memories and look forward to the year ahead and the delight it will bring. As the Gregorian calendar New Year approaches at midnight on January 1, 2015, many of us look to evaluate our financial matters, including ways to reduce our tax liability for the year. One fantastic way of lessening this burden is through the use of charitable donations. You can do this by paying your dues in full through our new online bill paying system, by increasing your High Holiday contribution or just by making a donation to the temple. As you know, your dues do not cover the entire operating expense of the temple so every donation made allows us, your lay leaders, to provide a more enriching experience at the temple for all members. Many of us end the year by filing away bills and determining our expenses for the New Year. One issue that has plagued many members in past years is the fact that people on a monthly payment plan do not meet their full obligation through the plan. If you are on a payment plan, please make sure that your entire obligation is fulfilled. Make sure your monthly payment includes all temple-related items and not just your dues or you will be left to pay religious school, b'nai mitzvah tutoring fees, the High Holy Day donation and any other obligations not covered separately by dues. If you have questions on this matter, please contact the office. 60th Anniversary of Temple Sholom Last year we announced the formation of our Legacy Circle to honor members who have made a commitment to include Temple Sholom in their estate planning. This year, the Board of Trustees will work to explain how each of us can help secure the temple’s future in this way. Money bequeathed to Temple Sholom is put into a Legacy Fund, which already contains the generous bequests of members who are no longer with us. This Fund will be invested to assure our Temple’s financial well-being and to provide for creativity and innovation to meet the needs of our community. We ask that you review your own situation to see if providing for the temple’s future fits in your plans. A small gift will go a long way in securing the temple’s long-term financial health. An interesting piece of secular trivia: throughout the year, visitors to Times Square in New York City write their New Year's wishes on pieces of official Times Square New Year's Eve confetti. At the end of the year, the wishes are collected and added to the one ton of confetti that showers the crowd gathered in Times Square to celebrate the New Year. As your co-presidents, we wish to partake in a modified version of the tradition and use this article to wish you and your family a Happy New Year. This month several grades will learn about Chanukah by considering courage, which in Hebrew is Ometz Layv , or strength of the heart. The word itself implies that courage is less about acts than about what we believe in our hearts and who we are. Using project-based learning, students will explore how, like the Maccabees, the shoes of others who have had to face difficult challenges and choices. In addition, they can look around their world and see who are the modern Maccabees. Ultimately, the challenge to each student is to remember that using inner strength for good is choosing to act upon an age-old Jewish value. Rachel Sesser their inner strength or Gevurah guides their choices and actions. Students will examine a variety of sources including the Gevurot prayer about God’s strength; the Al HaNissim prayer for Chanukah; biblical narratives; and of course, the story of the Maccabees. By the eighth night, all eight candles are lit. Each night, before lighting the candles, the first two blessings below are recited. One in particular stayed with me. I’d like to share it with you. In one Florida community, a rabbi and a member of his congregation’s Legacy team, met with a long-standing member of the congregation to discuss the possibility of including the synagogue in her estate plan. They approached her not because she was a wealthy woman but because she had been active in congregational life and showed her commitment to the congregation by consistently making a modest donation to the High Holy Day campaign. When they met, the woman talked about the pleasure her membership had given her over the years and she spoke of how she regretted being unable to leave something to the congregation. She had little besides the condo in which she lived and that would go, of course, to her three children. The rabbi asked her to think about the condo as more than a single entity to be passed on whole to her children. Would they keep it or sell it? And if they sold it, how would they divide the money? Could the proceeds of the sale be divided among four recipients? She was delighted to realize she could be a philanthropist simply by willing part of the proceeds of the sale of her condo to the synagogue. After consulting her children, who fully supported her plan, she asked her attorney to make the appropriate change to her will. She – and the children - took great pride in being able to support the future of her congregation in this way. This suspenseful family drama, which had a 2012 release in the U.S., will challenge some of your deeply held beliefs. When two families discover that their teenage sons might have another identity, all the characters—and maybe audience members, too—have to reexamine their lives and assumptions. Set in Israel, the conflict is intensified because it plays out against the backdrop of Israeli-Palestinian enmity. French film with subtitles and some spoken English. Suitable for mature teenagers.
