THE ROMAN TEMPLE
In 75 AD, the Romans built a large temple and baths in Bath around the only
natural hot spring in Britain. More than a million litres of water a day rise out
of the spring at a temperature of 46°C. The Romans believed this spring was
sacred.
The Classical Style temple was very unusual in Britain. It stood on a two-metrehigh podium with steps down to a courtyard below. Four columns supported a
frieze and a pediment. Behind the columns, there was a large door leading to
a dark room, which contained a statue of the pagan goddess, Sulis Minerva. In
the second century, the Romans added small chapels on each side of the steps,
which made the temple more similar to other Romano-Celtic temples in Britain.
The pagan temple at Bath was not used after 391 AD because of the arrival of
Christianity. It collapsed, and today only some of the stones from the pediment
have survived.
