October 30, 2014 Volume 2014, 12/20/2012 Issue 12 The CollegiateFYI FYI Collegiate Volume 1, Issue 15 Dear Collegiate Families, I am sure that many of you were surprised to see signs blocking the off street parking this morning! Over the next three weeks the county will be putting in a sidewalk and resurfacing the road. The impact of this project on the school as it is completed will be minimal. Carpool will continue to run as usual but there will be several days during the project where the entrance to the parking lot will be dirt. There may be a few days where flaggers will be monitoring traffic to ensure the project is completed safely and quickly. With this in mind I would like to remind all families that ALL elementary students should get picked up in the carpool line. Asking your child to walk to another location is a huge safety concern for our community. Please be respectful of other drivers and wait at the end of the line for your turn to park/pick up. The left lane is ONLY to be used to drive through after picking up children. Monday, November 3 is the first teacher In-service day of the year. These days are crucial times for our staff to meet for valuable professional development as well as to make strategic decisions as we reflect on the first months of school. On Monday the staff schedule includes training on teaching techniques for our gifted and talented students, a review of our emergency action procedures, incorporating technology into curriculum, and our teacher led committees will have time to develop their goals for the next few months. Next week our seniors will join seniors from across the state in taking the state CMAS test for Social Studies and Science. This is the first year these tests have been administered and will provide valuable information about our graduating seniors. We wish them the best of luck! Finally, I would like to personally thank the 15 students and their parents who have participated in my rocket club. Yesterday we successfully launched 12 rockets with only one lost to getting caught in a tree. Next Wednesday will be our last meeting of the fall and I would like to invite anyone interested to come and watch our rockets fly! We are still looking for volunteers that are willing to run 4 to 6 week clubs based on your passions. One of the great things about the Collegiate Community is that our educational opportunities extend outside the classroom. Your expertise is one way we can provide our students with the complete educational exposure we seek to provide to Reach the Peak! Enjoy your long weekend and this unseasonably warm weather. Tuesday, November 11, 2014 Five years ago my son’s elementary school had a Veteran’s Day program and we invited my stepfather. He nervously agreed to come and in a moment you will understand why. He was drafted into the Marines the very day he returned from his honeymoon and left home within days. He lost nearly every friend from his hometown including his best friend in just one year of the war. He was spit on and jeered as he walked through the airport the day he returned from service and Mr. Johnson has some amazing ideas his life would never be the same. The school served about 25 Vets of all ages that he would love to bring to fruition breakfast, sang to them, played taps on the bugle, and allowed each of them to this Veteran’s Day but we need Veter- share their years of service, rank at discharge, plus a brief statement followed by ans! Please click here to nominate rousing cheers. Many of the men and women were in tears. My stepfather still the Veterans in your circle including talks about that day because it was the first time he had been honored publicly relatives, friends, and community for his service in Vietnam and it was forty years later! ~ Pamela members. If you do not have all of the information requested please ask the Veteran! They will most likely be very honored that you asked. The goal is to serve the Veterans breakfast, recognize their service in an assembly, and invite them to visit classrooms to share their experiences and wisdom in age appropriate formats. These men and women have lived out each of our CORE values during their times of service and can provide real life examples of integrity, perseverance, quality, and ownership to our students. If you would like to help out with this event, please contact Mr. Johnson. Who: K-6th Students Attire: Harvest/Farm Theme Date: Friday, November 7th Time: 3:15 - 4:45 Where: Café.
