February 2015 From your HOA Board of Directors It is very encouraging to see the community pulling together and supporting each other. Even with all the changes we have had; we are moving in a positive direction. Having a new manager come to the property last summer brings more change, but we are working together to improve our park. A constant challenge is to improve the safety and security for our residents and community. With the implementation of Resident ID Cards there is a better awareness of who belongs in our community. In the back clubhouse the library was changed to the bigger room with more space and better lighting. The old library room will be converted into a storage February Activities Come join us for some fun. Please sign up for the following activities at the front clubhouse. Sat Feb 7 – Ice Cream Social and gift card Bingo. Come join the community to satisfy your sweet tooth and a chance to win a gift card at Bingo. Sat Feb 14 – The Activity committee will be having a Valentine’s Day Dinner. A dance will follow the dinner so everyone bring your dancing shoes and show your moves. A CD player will be setup so if you have some of your own special music you would like to hear bring it with you. Because of a scheduling conflict the 1st Annual Chili Cook Off will not be held this month. Please look for the event in March. No Activities will be held on Feb 21st.or 28th room to hold equipment for the Veterans meetings, exercise equipment and other HOA activities. The HOA board has been involved with other organizations, FMO (Federation of Manufactured Home Owners), Networking for Progress and MH Action Group. We have gained lots of useful knowledge on current Florida laws and how to proceed with management negotiations. Our future is looking good; we look forward to more residents wanting to become a part of the HOA. We are working to increase our membership so we have power in numbers for future negotiations with ELS. Again thank you for your support. http://www.starlight-hoa.com For Sale: GE Washer and Maytag Dryer – both for $300. call Marie 407-394-8638 A BIG THANK YOU to Luz Marie Mejias who we have all known as “OUR LUCY”!! She has been our activities chairman this past year and has led us in a LOT OF FUN!!! This has taken a lot of time and hard work. She has had to back off from so much involvement due to health reasons. Let’s hope we didn’t wear her out…..Lucy, we hope to see you at future events. Valentine's Day. Each year on February 14th, many people exchange cards, candy, gifts or flowers with their special “valentine.” The day of romance we call Valentine's Day is named for a Christian martyr and dates back to the 5th century, but has origins in the Roman holiday Lupercalia. For every new donation, a book will have to be removed from the shelves to donate to the VA Medical Center for their quarterly book sale. The books have been alphabetized and we want to keep them that way. If you are looking for a book and change your mind, please put the book you don’t want in the box on the table. I will put it back in order so we can keep the library looking great. Thanks, Laurie http://www.starlight-hoa.com Your HOA President’s Message Hello Starlight Ranch residents! This past month has seen some great new improvements. It’s been exciting to watch. Steven in the Starlight Ranch office is training as an acting manager here to help us get a lot of issues resolved. In the last few weeks he has initiated some clean-up projects in our community. You may have noticed a few of the changes such as some new signs, fresh paint on the speed bumps and the library relocation in the back Clubhouse. I want to thank him for his work helping our wishes come to be realities. The HOA board has also been going thru some changes. We now have our board and activity committee set for 2015. I am looking forward to a great year with our HOA and all of its members. There is also a lot of work going on outside of our community to help us get resources to improve our knowledge and abilities to work with management and the expected future growth of our community. One of the bits of information that we have learned is the stronger our HOA membership is…the stronger we are dealing with management. Do you know anyone who has not yet joined our HOA? I'm looking forward to our 2015 get-togethers and am planning to see you soon!!! Thank you Curt Some Valentine Fun Facts • Men spend almost twice as much on Valentine’s Day as women do. This year, the average man will spend $156, while the average woman will only spend $85. • For every 120 single men who are in their 20s, there are 100 single women in the same age range. • The story changes drastically when we look at people over 65. Beyond 65, there are 33 single men for every 100 single women of the same age range. I guess all that extra spending for Valentine’s day takes a toll. • Three different Saint Valentines have been mentioned by the martyrologies of the Roman Catholic Church. • The Catholic Church struck St. Valentine’s Day from its official calendar in 1969. • Penicillin, a popular treatment for venereal diseases such as syphilis, was introduced to the world on February 14, 1929. His name is Michael Meyer, and he is a Police Chaplin. Michael has lived in Starlight Ranch for 10 years. Welcome Michael and please come back. We won’t be known as the Veteran’s Meeting any longer. We are now The Veteran’s and Friends Social Hour. Food was very good as usual. Tonight we had lasagna, cold cut sandwiches and two types of cookies. Nobody went home hungry. Please come and give us a try. Hola Residentes del Rancho Starlight As you can see, this is not written in Spanish. Normally, every month Jose Rodriquez and Luz Mejias work together to provide all our Hispanic residents an update in their language. However, right now as I’m typing this, Jose is in the hospital recovering from major surgery. Please keep the Rodriquez family in your prayers. I spoke with Jose the day before he went to the hospital and he was confident he would be back quickly. Hopefully, by the time you are reading this he will by home and well. Thanks…. Jim Henley http://www.starlight-hoa.com Condolences GUESS WHO It is sad for me to report one of our long time residents, Stony Parks, passed away suddenly on December the 22nd. Stony was a close neighbor to us and served many of our residents doing the many odd jobs he was so skilled at. He will be sorely missed. His parents, Bob and Alice Parks Mullally who are also residents, wish to thank everyone for all of their prayers, cards, food and sympathy in the passing of their son Stony Parks. To continue this popular article we need your input to keep it going. If you would like to participate and have everyone guess your picture, please contact Mary Rivera at 407914-2845. We would need to borrow your picture for input in the news letter and will return it back to you promptly. Patsy Zajac We received notice from Tom Zajac that Patsy has continued to suffer memory problems and Tom was advised to place her in a nursing home so she can get special care. Both Tom and Patsy have served our residents in so many ways. Tom as president of the HOA and Patsy was always there for support in all our activities. Tom and Patsy had just celebrated their sixty third wedding anniversary. I know I can speak for many that appreciated Patsy’s service. Please keep both Tom and Patsy in your prayers. If we could hold on to them until the next day…..these boxes would be eligible for RECYCLE! Cardboard is the stuff most large boxes are made of….with the corrugated wavy “stuff” between layers of heavy paper. Paste board is thinner, like cereal boxes. Our trash company, (Gotta Get Their Name), picks up both. They would be happier with us if we broke these things down flat. We can either place them in the plastic recycle containers….or just stack the piles neatly by the curb. http://www.starlight-hoa.com Anniversaries Dennis & Joanne Goerndt February 17th (64th Anniversary) Jose & Iris Rodriquez February 17th Some February Historic Events (not so well known) February 3, 1913 - The 16th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified, granting Congress the authority to collect income taxes. A little President History for February Presidents’ Day, officially Washington’s Birthday, in the United States, holiday (third Monday in February) popularly recognized as honoring George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. The day is sometimes understood as a celebration of the birthdays and lives of all U.S. presidents. The origin of Presidents’ Day lies in the 1880s, when the birthday of Washington—commander of the Continental Army during the American Revolution and the first president of the United States—was first celebrated as a federal holiday. In 1968 Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Bill, which moved a number of federal holidays to Mondays. The change was designed to schedule certain holidays so that workers had a number of long weekends throughout the year, but it has been opposed by those who believe that those holidays should be celebrated on the dates they actually commemorate. During debate on the bill, it was proposed that Washington’s Birthday be renamed Presidents’ Day to honour the birthdays of both Washington (February 22) and Lincoln (February 12); although Lincoln’s birthday was celebrated in many states, it was never an official federal holiday. Following much discussion, Congress rejected the name change. After the bill went into effect in 1971, however, Presidents’ Day became the commonly accepted name, due in part to retailers’ use of that name to promote sales and the holiday’s proximity to Lincoln’s birthday. Presidents’ Day is usually marked by public ceremonies in Washington, D.C., and throughout the country. http://www.starlight-hoa.com For advertising, please contact our HOA Office Page 7 http://www.starlight-hoa.com For advertising, please contact our HOA Office Page 8
