TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE — After Air Force
explosive ordnance disposal officials reported mission accomplished for Operation
Enduring Freedom on Sept. 3, the last EOD
flight, containing two Tyndall airmen, is now
home from Afghanistan.
Thirteen years after the tragic attacks
on Sept. 11, 2001, Staff Sgt. James Hendel,
325th Civil Engineer Squadron EOD craftsman, and Staff Sgt. David Thomas, 325th
CES EOD craftsman, came home after being deployed to Afghanistan with the 466th
EOD Operating Location Bravo Flight.
“I think it’s good for EOD to be out of Afghanistan,” Thomas said. “We love to do our
job and be overseas doing it, but at the same
time, it’s really good for families to have us
back. EOD has been over there for more
than a decade, and the tempo was at a very
high pace. Most of that time, our airmen
were gone as much as they were at home.”
According to the Air Force website, Air
Force EOD airmen have completed 55,847
missions and responded to 19,946 improAirman 1st Class Sergio A. Gamboa | Air Force

Even though the mission was
different from normal, EOD still
got their job done.
“The final mission was to
bring everything back from over
there,” Hendel said. “There was

but for the last month there, we
focused on packing everything
and preparing to leave.”
This was Hendel’s first deployment to Afghanistan, and one he
had mixed emotions about.
“When I found out I was deploying, I had an idea that I was
going to be in the last rotation
of EOD units in Afghanistan,”
Hendel said. “It’s bittersweet. It

For the past seven years,

P4 brings big
ideas, changes
By Airman 1st Class
Dustin Mullen

TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE —
Big changes require coordination and big decisions.
Tyndall and the local community are working together
through the P4 initiatives,
Public-Public; Public-Private
Partnership, to help make
those big changes possible.
“P4 is a way for Tyndall to
look at partnering with other
entities, like local or state governments or private entities
in the community,” said Col.
Christopher D. Holmes, 325th
Mission Support Group commander. “This will help us resolve issues or look at projects
that are mutually beneficial.”
Although
partnerships
have existed between the
surrounding communities,
businesses and Tyndall in the
past, this program is a way to
resolve the most challenging
issues with the oversight and
staff support of Headquarters
Air Force.
During the meeting, Col.
Derek C. France, 325th Fighter Wing commander, signed
a program that allows a sharing of information between
Tyndall and CareerSource
Florida.
“The Veteran and Spouse
Employment Information initiative will allow us to capture
skill-sets of military members
and spouses in a database,”
Holmes said. “This will allow
employers to more effectively
recruit potential employees
and increase the opportunities for veterans to transfer
their military skills to the
civilian world. This enables
Bay County to see what kinds
of skill-sets are available and
assist the county in recruiting
new industry that can capitalize on those skill-sets.”
Airman 1st Class Dustin Mullen | Air Force
Col. Derek C. France, 325th Fighter Wing
commander, and Kimberly Bodine, CareerSource
Gulf Coast executive director, sign documents Oct. 9
during a P4, Public-Public; Public-Private Partnership,
meeting that will allow information to be shared
between Tyndall and CareerSource Florida.
At the meeting, working
groups also discussed a potential dredging project that
will expand the port of Panama City. Tyndall would serve
as a location for the dredging
spoils.
“This would be a big
economic benefit for the
community,” Holmes said.
“Tyndall’s benefit, other than
being a good neighbor, is that
we would have potential use
of these spoils to help control beach erosion or other
benefits.”
They also discussed a few
partnerships in the medical
community.
“We are working to better
utilize resources between the
civilian medical community
and the medical community
on base,” Holmes said. “One
initiative is a time-share plan
that will allow us to utilize
medical space downtown so
that we can provide follow-up
medical care for TRICARE
recipients in a much closer
location to their off-base
residences.”
One other initiative is to
station a Bay County Advanced Life Support ambulance on base that will provide more advanced capability with improved response
times to Tyndall medical
emergencies, while also better supporting Mexico Beach
and Parker.
“We were really able to
chart ways forward and set
up the next milestones for
most of these initiatives,”
Holmes said. “For a lot of
these, it wasn’t clear exactly
what action needs to be taken next, but with everyone
in one set location, we were
able to move along.”
The official program
kicked off March 21, when
50 members of the base
and local community came
together for the first time
to discuss the program.
“It’s not business as usual. It will take time,” said Maj.
Gregg A. Quinones, partnership broker assigned to the
Secretary of the Air Force for
Installations, Environment
and Logistics. “We’re breaking new ground.”

Gulf Defender | Tyndall’s Oktoberfest a big success
325th Fighter Wing Public Affairs
TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE —
Tyndall hosted its annual
Oktoberfest event Oct. 17
at Bay View base housing
to boost morale, promote
welfare and provide recreation to the base and local
community.
“This is our ‘giving back
to the community’ event.
It provides an opportunity
for private organizations to
come out and fundraise as
well as create a great family
atmosphere in the middle of
October,” said Daniel Albin,
325th Force Support Squadron marketing director and
director of the event.
More than 1,200 people
attended the event, and
more than 22 booths were
set up.
“This year, there was a
bigger crowd, more private
organizations and more activities,” Albin said. “Every
year the event keeps getting bigger and better.”
The event had multiple
units, private organizations and vendors from the
community serving many
commodities, such as German bratwurst and beer,
bounce castles, pony rides,
a petting zoo, various food
booths and carnival games.
“The event offered a lot
of different things to do, and
it was very fun,” said Justin
Powell, 325th Contracting
Squadron contracting specialist. “I really enjoyed myself. There was a live band,
good food and I couldn’t ask
for anything better to do
with my friends.”
One event was a bratwurst eating contest where
contestants had 8½ minutes to eat as many as they
could. The winner managed
to eat eight.
“I had a lot of fun in the
contest. I never thought
it would be exciting until I did it,” said Staff Sgt.
Michael C. Scanlon 325th
Communications Squadron
unit training manager and
winner of the competition.
“I would have eaten more
brats if it wasn’t for that
foot-long sub I had earlier
that day.”

started, it was more of a car
show, but it has morphed

“We just want to say
thanks to all the veterans for their service and

Retiree Activity Office
director.
On the day of the event,
retirees can dine at the

“Retiree Appreciation
Day takes over 20 volunteers and support from
various on- and off-base
