Embedding Reports in SharePoint
Put reports in the workflow, where the business
needs them, to make better decisions
In many cases, it’s useful to make Wax LRS reports show up in other systems like SharePoint or
internal reporting dashboards. The SharePoint xAPI Solution lets you do this using the Wax LRS
LTI report embedding functionality.
Embed reports with just a couple of clicks and copy & paste! Each report has a blue “Embed me!”
button at the top right corner.
Copy and paste the LTI Launch URL and OAuth consumer & secret keys into a SharePoint web part
(enabled by the SharePoint xAPI solution), and the report is embedded. The great thing about Wax
LRS report embedding is that it’s kept up to date in near-real-time!
Technical & Functional Overview
The SharePoint xAPI Solution can be deployed on SharePoint 2010 or 2013.
Solution Requirements: Administrators must have SharePoint site or site collection
administrator permissions allowing SharePoint solution (.wsp) upload,
deployment/activation, and feature activation (for adding web parts and configuring
activity tracking).
Permissions: For SharePoint activity tracking directly to an LRS (not for LTI course
launch and report embedding), the SharePoint xAPI Solution creates a new “LRS
group” with “LRS configuration access permissions”. Any administrator with these
permissions can view and make changes to the LRS configuration settings, the data
sent to the LRS (what’s being tracked), and the audit of the LRS.
LRS Configuration: This is a page in SharePoint where a Learning Record Store is
configured by an administrator. Any xAPI (Experience API) v1.0.0 compliant Learning
Record Store can be configured to work with this SharePoint solution. An LRS endpoint (where the LRS data is sent) and a set of Basic Auth credentials must be provided by the LRS and stored on this configuration page.
LRS Statements: Data is sent to an LRS in batches on a timed interval. There is a
page in SharePoint where an administrator configures the activity being tracked (like
documents, videos, social activity, and more depending on the level of customization).
SharePoint Solution Customization
Most SharePoint tracking functionality is developed by Saltbox on a per-client basis due to the
variation in client requirements. Saltbox customizes the SharePoint solution in the following way:
1. Gather requirements. Better understand the desired business outcomes and measurement, what
needs to be tracked, what LRS will be used, and other information about the existing client SharePoint environment.
2. Provide a project plan. This includes an estimate for time & resources and specific deliverables.
3. Gain client sign off and begin SharePoint solution customization work. Typically, this takes between 4 and 8 weeks depending on the client requirements.
