HALF YEARLY, 2014

MARKET UPDATE
NSW OVERVIEW
In the first half of 2014, the Sydney IT development market saw
increased recruitment activity in comparison to previous years.
The telco industry and public sector saw a high amount of
activity in the Java and testing markets, and this was driven by
new projects. The commerce and industry sector saw an
increase in the need for professionals skilled in .Net
technologies, iOS development, as well as UI/UX design. We
also saw a large increase in the Magento and CQ5 technologies
across eCommerce organisations as they sought to improve
their online transaction-based portfolios. The banking sector
saw a mix of strategic, high-level hires and an increase in the
number of fixed-term opportunities for developers with a focus
on Core Java and C# with WPF skills.
Across all sectors, the market was influenced by increased
confidence in Australia’s economy, and as a result organisations
increased hiring across development technologies. The
commerce and telco sector saw a shortage in .Net, UX/UI
design, iOS, and JavaScript candidates, while the banking sector
saw a lack of availability of skills including UX/UI design, and
front office development with FX business domain knowledge.
LOOKING FORWARD
In the next half of 2014 and with the approval of new projects,
we expect the banking sector to continue to demand
candidates in UX/UI design, as well as front office investment
banking developers with C# and WPF experience. The
commerce and industry sector will continue to see demand
across CQ5/AEM and Magento development as organisations
focus on improving their online transaction presence. We also
expect a continued shortage of .Net developers with UI design
experience in the commerce sector with an increase of
opportunities in the market for this skill set. The telco sector will
continue to demand CQ5/AEM skills along with Native Mobile
Development (iOS/Android) skills as projects are planned and
funded until the end of 2014. The growing popularity of
virtualised environments has also seen an increased need of
skills in the Cloud space.

In order to source and secure the top talent, we recommend
that the interview process is as streamlined as possible.
Candidates have a wider choice of opportunities and therefore
highlighting every benefit of a role at the briefing stage is
imperative – examples include health insurance, flexibility in
working hours, career growth opportunities and job security.
In the commerce and industry sector as well as the telco and
public sector, the salaries for SharePoint developers have
aligned with those of .Net developers, where historically .Net
developer salaries were significantly higher. Candidates with
experience in niche areas such as developers with Cloud
experience (AWS and Microsoft Azure), Senior JavaScript and
Native iOS professionals will command a premium and will
continue to do so throughout 2014. All other areas across
development and testing remained at the same level in the first
half of 2014 and are expected to remain constant as the
demand and availability continue at similar levels.
KEY TRENDS
• There will be an increased demand for contractors due to
an increase in project sign-off after the new financial year
• There will be continued focus on front office and front
end development across C# and WPF to improve the
user experience
• eCommerce platforms will increase in popularity and the
market will therefore become more candidate-short
across CQ5 and Magento, as organisations focus on
improving their online transaction presence
